City Break

Cologne is lovely, plus it now only takes about 4 1/2 hours to get there by train from St P (amazingly for those of us who as a kid used to get there in a gruelling overnight 12 hour train journey via Dover Western Docks, Ostend etc). As with anywhere else in Germany, check out the football too - it's still ridiculously cheap to get in, the strength of the Euro notwithstanding.

Pardon my ignorance...where is St.P ?

He did mention Ireland, and has always wanted to go there. Dya think £500 budget is feasable ?

Would be a push but flight prices are usually a tenner or so and if you stay just outside there are some fairly good B&B's.

MYOB would be your man over that side of the water to ask.

Munich, lovely place.

Vienna

Innsbruck, access to the mountains can only take 20 mins.

Madrid, Barcelona.

I had a great time in Montpelier. French culture, historic core city.

Your mate could stay in Ostia 25 mins by train outside of Rome, access to beaches, next to best preserved part of Roman history and alot cheaper and not so geared up to foreign tourists.

Stockholm, Copengahen, Prague, Budapest, the list is frankly my dear endless.

Barca, just got back, forth time there, if yer on a budget simply avoid bars, restaurants etc on Las Ramblas, don't be put off by tales of pick pockets etc, they make enough out of piss heads and stag doos, to leave regular joes alone (touch wood) PS yes I did get to THAT match on Saturday, best first half i've seen since The Albion were 5-0 up v Charlton in 1983

Ljubljana - spent a night there after the England game in Zagreb the other week. Fantastic place, cheap to get to, hotels aren't overly cheap for that part of the world but it's really cheap to eat and drink.

Haven't been to Prague for a few years and have heard your money doesn't go very far these days. Bratislava on the other hand might be a good alternative.

Really wouldn't take my bird to Berlin, it's all right place to go if you want to get smashed out of your nut but not a great deal else to do and it's still pretty sleazy and run down in parts. Same goes for Amsterdam (well maybe not run down but 10x as sleazy!).

Barcelona is another good option, far nicer than Madrid IMO. A bit left field but Faro (Portugal) is actually quite nice, cheap to get to, right next to an airport with good weather and not really that touristy at all compared to Villamoura or Albefura.

Alternatively find out these things for yourself.

I'd echo what Arthur has said, Ljubljana is a beautiful city and very romantic without breaking the bank. Intimate enough so you can do the sightseeing comfotably in a weekend but still plenty to do to keep you entertained. I'd recommend it over many of the other big, overpriced cities of Europe.

I want to go to Berlin for my birthday next year. There's loads of clubs that just don't shut at the weekend on the waterfront.

Flights aren't too bad if you book them nice and early either. About 50 schnuffs return.

I hope your birthday is during the warm months otherwise they will be closed all weekend. Most of the riverside places are open-air and shut during the winter.
