. The problem Ashton has is that this decision smacks of favouritism; you have to wonder if the punishment would have been the same if it was one of the more established player, or somebody that wouldn't have allowed Ian 'Brian Ashton's lovechild' Balshaw to come in to the side.
That's rubbish Ashton picked Cipriani over Balshaw in the 1st place didn't he?
You seem to have twisted Cipriani's stupidity into being Ashton's fault
But I don't think that he's done anything 'stupid'. I've seen no evidence that there was any curfew in place, so what exactly has he done wrong? The extent of his mistake seems to be going somewhere where there were photographers.
And there's nothing to say that Ashton didn't suddenly have a change of heart, decide he wanted Balshaw in the side, and was maybe looking for a reason to drop Cipriani. I'm just saying it may have factored into his thinking (conciously or otherwise).
I just find it slightly bizarre that Ashton came to this decision which has been met with surprise all round from people involved in the game.
I think he was told to stay in and have an early night by Ashton, and assumably the rest of the team were told the same. It may seem a bit schoolmasterish to treat players this way but if those are the rules of the England coach it seems you have to take heed or get dropped. Doubt any others will be caught out and about anytime soon in the same circumstances.
It seems there was a curfew, this taken from the link on page one of this thread -
The 21-year-old was yesterday told to have an early night, but at 12.30am he was spotted emerging from the Isis nightclub in Mayfair, central London
Fair enough, I hadn't spotted that. He certainly won't make the same mistake again! Given that he has broken the rules, I don't quite understand the outcry from Wasps and Matt Dawson (among others) then...
