That's very sad news at the start of a new year. CMJ has been ever-present throught my life-long love of sport & I just can't get my bonce around TMS & 5Live (originally Radio 2, of course) without his intelligent, professional presence & dulcet tones.

May he rest peacefully.

As a cricket devotee, this is about the most shocking possible start to my sporting year. He will be really missed. RIP.

Absolutely gutted to hear this. Wonderful eloquence behind the microphone and an authoritative gravitas that simply demanded your attention when he stepped up to speak, yet you wanted to give that attention. You wanted to hear the great man. Effortless. The sound of many a long summer throughout most of my 44 years on this earth.

Christopher Martin Jenkins RIP

I was very sad to hear just now that CMJ has passed away.

I knew he was very ill, because they mentioned it on TMS recently when imploring punters to read his latest book. But I was sorry to learn he has died this morning.

I listened to his commentary on headphones when we were at Lords beating Lancashire in the C&G and remember he had to leave the box when his son Robin came on. The rest of the commentators were gently taking the piss, because he was so proud and nervous he couldn't speak.

I shall be reading his latest book next.

If there is another CMJ RIP thread, I'm sorry to duplicate. If not, this is a rare oversight by NSC, normally such a reliable source of such news.

Re: Christopher Martin Jenkins RIP

Very sad. There is a lovely article on the Telegraph site by Derek Pringle about CMJ. A brave man to battle on with his work, despite being so close to death.

I guess it comes with age, but I am fast losing a lot of people I admired greatly.

I saw him in the concourse at the C&G final. I wish I had spoken to him or bought him a glass of vino.

When Sussex won the title in 2007 he was in the Cricketers after the game enjoying a pint and chat amongest fellow Sussex surportters. No chip on the shoulder attitude just like to chat cricket with fellow followers and in fact during that match against Yorkshire from time to time you would see him chatting to his son Robin when field ing the deep. There are jobs inside and out of our house that always need doing and many a time you don't want to do them but when you listern to TMS its as if it is a Jolly Boys Outing and a game of cricket just happens to be being played,it for me makes those unwelcome tasks so much easier. Thank-you CMJ for all the hours of joy you have given me.

What a week, Greigy and CMJ gone, both with well played 50's but couldn't carry it on

Cricket won't be the same :(

And now with some of the best batsman we've ever seen coming to the winter of their careers...

Testing times for everyone who loves the game

Been some wonderful tributes and obit in The Times today, a genuine nice guy who, although gone, will not be forgotten.

And the photo with The Times obit is a smiling CMJ watching cricket from the wooden benches in the sunshine at Hove. Bloody marvellous. RIP CMJ

I think we played Crewe on a Sunday as Sussex were in the One day final which we won, however we were camping in the New Forest.

As luck would have it we had a radio and it was a very close game and when Sussex won Aggers said "Sussex win and well done to them and then said and we will forgive CMJ for one moment of madness during the game". His son Robin was playing and I believe missed a catch or something and legend has it CMJ went to the back of the commentary box and angrily demolished a chair no less.

He was passionate about cricket in every form and will be sadly missed.
