Christmas Eve and Boxing Day on BBC1 are no better.

Dare I say it, the highlight is my two least favourite teams playing on BBC on Boxing Day. Shame they can't both lose.

Some argue that the license fee is good value for money. But when you look at the material and services available and each broadcasters original material, I don't think so.

I take your point – and the comparisons will ALWAYS be made with the alternatives to terrestrial TV. But for the three days of Christmas, the BBC costs license payers £1.29. For 10 TV channels, all the radio stations and the website. Which means the 'cost' of that BBC running order for Christmas day is about 20p! The Gruffalo is worth that alone...

Prime isn't just film and TV though. It's loads of music, books and next day delivery of course. Granted Netflix is only films, series & documentaries etc but the quality and variation in my opinion is better than BBC.

Oh and if you use an Amazon smart speaker you can listen to pretty much any radio.

In Sweden we celebrate on the 24th of December, and at 15.00 everyone watches Donald Duck on the state television. Everyone. Its a tradition since 1958.

After Donald Duck, a lot of people keep the TV on and watch the cute, Communist propaganda movie "Karl-Bertil Jonssons jul (christmas)".

The commercial channels did try to compete when they first came around in the early 90s, but they have now conceded and instead show something that requires minimal effort and that no one gives a shit about. Like some reprisal of "Little House on the Praire, episode 128".

I think people are overly dismissive of this. It's true that there's not much for adults to get excited about but families with young children have plenty to watch (although I suggest it's wasteful putting kids programme on the morning of Christmas Day). And there's some decent stuff for adults too - Worzel Gummidge may be for younger audiences but it's excellent and Dunkirk is a decent enough film.

There's no new ghost story though - that always used to be the Christmas highlight

I can honestly say there is absolutely nothing there that would tear me away from the small number of family who will be around.

James Martin’s Christmas Special! I can’t wait. He has as much personality as our bird feeder, and is less interesting.
