Today Sunak told us UK economy will contract by 11.7% this year, worst for 300 years. Just remember folks if we're not sensible it won't just be cases and deaths, but another lockdown will be just more pain for business and job losses to follow.

Is it worth it?

No it’s not.

I really can’t think of many justifying reason to do this.

If people had an elderly loved one (alone at Xmas) maybe it would have been good to make an exception snd allow them to visit on Xmas day. However even then the risk to that individual is high.

I’m a big believer in mental health awareness but I just can’t think of a reason to undo all the hard work for these 5 days.

I told my dad today that I’m not seeing him this year because I’d like to give him a present in person next year instead of giving him COVID as his final Xmas present this year.

Problem is it's always someone else's problem. There's a large minority that don't give a rats arse about any of the above. Post Xmas is going to be very nasty I suspect

Can I just clarify, is that people don't give a rat's arse about the economy and jobs or people dying? Obviously two very different stand points so wouldn't want to get them confused?

It's a fair point, if a tricky one to satisfactorily answer. Those of us lucky enough to be Tier 1 will effectively be more restricted across those 5 days in some ways.

I'm beginning to think the same. I've heard today that if you don't want to bubble up you don't have to and you can carry on with the rules in your Tier, so as you say if in Tier1 that might suit people better.

Lock down is in place till March April what ever.

What happens over Xmas makes no difference.

Jobs are going with extended lockdown or without.

Part of the bonus of lockdown

Furlough is destroying the public finances, the less people on it the better. You use it as a last resort not as a remedy for government incompetence

There is no lockdown bonus just poverty down the road for many

Even if people care about the economy, the chances are that they don't understand it. (From today's FT: "British people “lack a basic understanding” of economic statistics such as unemployment or the government’s deficit, and at the same time mistrust official data, a hard-hitting report funded by the Office for National Statistics concluded on Wednesday.").

Poor education is once again at the root of most of our problems.

Furlough isn’t stopping companies going under either

You are suggestion the actions over Xmas will extend lockdown, it’s not going to we will be in Tiers till March which is as good as a lockdown in areas.

Nikki Sturgeon the first to break ranks over the mutual agreement, Scottish Goverrnment has confirmed for Scotland there should be no more than 8 people within the 3 households and seperate households within their Winter holiday bubble should strictly keep 2m apart at all times.

Nikki Sturgeon the first to show common sense over the mutual agreement. The Scottish Goverrnment has confirmed for Scotland there should be no more than 8 people within the 3 households and seperate households within their Winter holiday bubble should strictly keep 2m apart at all times.

Corrected for you, for typos and inaccuracies... my pleasure!

We have an Air BnB booked. The statement mentions only being at home. I wonder whether our booking will be cancelled.

Have you figured this out yet?

My parents are in a similar situation, they have a holiday cottage booked over Xmas in a tier 3 area, within these relaxed dates. Not sure if they are allowed to go or not? ???

Edit: seems this will be fine

Unsure. The Christmas rules don’t seem to mention overnight stays apart from in the context of forming bubbles and mixing in private homes.
If you look at the new tier rules it seems tier 2 (where we are going; Norfolk) is fine. Your parents are not allowed overnight stays outside their local area in tier 3 I think.

Think I edited my original post just before you replied, see above.

Looks like both you and my parents will be able to still go, fully within the regulations.
