easter is a pagan festival based on the equinox.

the resurection of a sun god has been done many time (horus, dionysis, mithra) and has been copied and used by the catholics.

the resurrection story goes back to Osiris and the resurrection of the soul.

the 3 days is to do with the sun (sun god) at xmas where the sun dies for 3 days and then is reborn on the 25th december.

research astrotheology.

christianity is a joke and keeps people in fear and guilt, and keeps self power quashed.

rant over.

Ignorant prat.

Ignorant prat.

care to explain which part is ignorant? the only obvious mistake is attributing the absorbation of prior religions and spiritual beleives to the catholics, when obviously it applies to all christianity.

he died, so we go and celebrate with a chocolate egg, obviously

There is a reason for that. It's a gripping tale involving beastality, Bill Gates, Jesus, Aliens, A Chavy 14 year old girl from Stockport and Stephen Hawkins. It is so AMAZING it is banned from the bible.

The "facts" are different. Apart from the writings of the Greeks and Romans, there is very little evidence of what ancient peoples actually believed in.

We have plenty of evidence of belief systems from the middle east and beyond which do not rely on Greek or Roman sources

Incidentally ... most of what we "know" about ancient cultures (including the Greeks and Romans) comes from the Victorians, who wrote about the history of the world from one perspective - the "certain" knowledge that the history of mankind was the progression from polytheistic (ignorant) superstition to monotheistic (science based) civilisation.

This is another load of complete tosh. Are you saying that the last century of scholarship is essentially a study of the Victorians?

You should ahave picked a better historica figure. There is plnty of archaeological evidnence to support hannibals campaign.

Sorry, but there's no archaeological evidence at all to indicate a person called Hannibal existed.

None at all.

There's no reference to him at all in Carthaginian writings, which is strange given he's supposed to be their greatest general ever.

So I actually picked a perfect example.

The first he's heard of in written form is long after he "might" have existed.

What I do not like about this thinking is that you need religion for morals and an ethical way of living. I am not religious, in fact from attending a Roman Catholic school I would say that I am pretty anti-religion, it was enough to put anyone off for life.

Anyway - I don't steal, I do not cheat etc etc but I do not have to have the threat of going to hell or the wrath of God to stop me doing these things. My own conscience is enough for me to decide what is morally/ethically correct.

Why can't you teach about respect and goodness to fellow man without slapping a religious figure on the moral of the story?

I think you may have slightly misunderstood me Wilko as I agree 100% with you there. I wasn't saying religious teaching is the only route to morality, far from it, but that some of it has worth in terms of human decency. I get pissed off (though probably not as pissed off as Juan Albion) at the moronic 'all religion and everything about religion is worthless/evil/a lie/joke etc' argument.

He was forced underground after escaping from a maximum security stockade. he is hardly likely to publicise himself is he.

I do have a dig at religion and do not see why it is such a problem? We seem to be allowed to debate all things on this earth but as soon as the topic of religion comes up it is a taboo, why? Why can't people say that it is a load of old bollocks if they want? Dawkins has been saying this for years that for some reason it is a topic we are not allowed to discuss.

oh, but its such a good argument to make. maybe you have been missing something, but for the past couple hundred years religion has been saying exactly the opposite, that everything not in the scripture is worthless, evil and a lie. with the majority of people now bearly religious and largly agnostic, many more are coming to realise that religion is full of hypocracy, lies and evil and are have a fun time bashing them for it. consider it payback for the past and frankly the religions are getting off lightly.

But again you've missed my point. I'm not saying you can't have a dig at religion - I do often. What I'm saying is it's far too simplist to say that everything about religion is wrong. I agree that organised religion, blind faith, fanaticism and corrupt/amoral religious institutions have been the cause of a great deal of the world's wrongs. However, that's not saying everyone with faith, every religious person or organisation, every religious teaching is wrong. There have been wars, abuses and terrible acts in the name of politics too, but you don't hear anywhere near as many people saying that there is no merit in political systems with the same broad brush that they do religion. It's just too easy and convenient to make religion and faith the whipping boys, because then you don't have to think of what good is also done in it's name.

Todays Leeds result should put the question of the existence of a higher being to bed once and for all.
