I just hope that if (IF) we reach the PL, but then find ourselves at the arse-end of it battling to stay up (which is entirely feasible), the fans who have become accustomed to winning week-in, week-out don't then turn on CH. I honestly don't think anyone could do a better job than that fella.

Completely agreed.

He should never have been sacked at Newcastle or Norwich, so I was very pleased when we got him. And I don't think there is any doubt how well he has done so far with turning that awful season around so quickly to nearly getting promoted last year with just bad luck failing us. Hopefully, he is going to take us one step further this year and stay with us for years to come.

And therein lies the problem with some football fans expectations.

When CH took over he had to try and keep clean sheets to pick up enough points to stay up because the strikers ''couldn't kick doors at Halloween''. This so called ''new manager bounce'' only applies if the new manager takes over a squad of players who are underperforming. Chris took over a squad which was not underperforming. They were at their best but the squad assembled by the previous Manager just wasn't good enough. That was just bad recruitment.

In one ''active'' transfer window he went straight to the top of the league at the start of the next season. He always says it takes at least 4 transfer windows to put a capable squad together and that seems to have been fairly accurate looking at where we are at the moment.

Tonight is a really interesting match for me. Part of me thinks we are better than Sheff Wed and should go out and take the game to them. The other part of me sees Sheff Wed as the main challengers to an automatic Promotion place so would I just try and keep them at bay by ensuring we don't lose and let them gain any ground on us - So glad it's not my call to make but look forward to a real tactical battle tonight.

Last time it was us that had to come out and take them on in the play offs. This time it is them that has to do it if they want to chase an automatic promotion place. How they set up to play tonight will determine whether they are chasing play offs or chasing automatic promotion.

I'm with someone else on the page of this thread. The football was dire, but especially for the last c10 games of the season, when (from memory) Tex and Baldock had picked up their injuries and we were left with the unholy trinity of CMS, COG and Leon ****ing Best. That's not to say I was calling for CH to go, just that I was reserving judgment and didn't think we'd be where we are now, let alone where we were last season.

I would have been fairly happy with mid-table the following season with half an eye on the playoffs. What CH did last year was staggering.

Sounds good, let's do it.

Nah.

Not as glad as I am :)

They'd be happy with a point tonight. Of course they might get more, but they'll be preparing for a fast start from us. They'll look to get through the first 20 minutes and get the crowd quiet. Let's not make it our objective to help them.

He's impossible not to like. Not sure I've ever come across someone so dignified. Remarkable fella.

I would guess that a good football manager is actually an excellent politician

I don't think it is out of order to notice the passing similarity between CH and President Obama. As well as the same haircut they definitely have things in common in terms of their personal and leadership styles. Hughton probably has a slightly more in depth knowledge of global affairs and is better at making big decisions under pressure though.

Well let's hope when his tenure eventually comes to end that CH isn't replaced by basically a clown with bad hair

Apologies if fixtures...
Interesting article about CH in today's Telegraph.

Lovely piece - thanks.

Great conclusion...

I’ve always had a social conscience, a belief in everyone’s right to a good education, to free, high quality health care, to good, clean and safe social housing.

“I still strongly believe in a diverse Britain, a fair, caring society, but it tends to be who is playing in the next game that keeps me up at night.

“This job consumes you, it takes over your life, I don’t have time to worry about the state of the world anymore.”

Brighton / Hove actually
*sheepishly raises hand.*

I wasn't quite in the 'get him out' boat but I had serious doubts. They didn't last long the following season.

In our defense, miserable doesn't even begin to do justice to the dross we were served up at the end of that season. We'd also just seen the club give the previous manager just that little bit too much time. I'm angry with myself now because if anything, I tend to be right on the other end of the 'giving someone a chance' scale.

I wanted Hughton to get the job after Garcia, but when he came here our end of season football and results didn't leave a lot to look forward to the following season. I think I gave him 7 games of the next season before I passed my judgment. Needless to say he passed and I haven't looked back.

CH is great manager, and all round good guy. When the press were on about him as England's first black manager,I realised I'd never even considered his colour before-truly remarkable for somebody of my generation (born in the '50's).We've come a long way on the equality front, but there's still some way to go.:albion2:

The contrast between Mr Hughton and Gus Poyet (From what I've seen) couldn't be more stark! I hope we remember this when things are not going as well..

Wanted CH when Hyypia got the job. Not been disappointed and whilst probably unlikely, would love to see him have a Ferguson like tenure. (stay until he retires). Just seems a decent individual and footballing wise is excellent.

I don't agree that the squad were in the position they deserved to be in. If so why sack Hyypia? The squad was much better than bottom half.

Chris hughton is a gentleman and will always be remembered for his achievements here at Newcastle.

He deserves success, and so do Brighton , it's a proper football club , I hope Brighton and Newcastle are promoted , what he's done there is amazing.

Good luck , hope we both finish in the top two , and I'm not concerned what order it is.
