Legend. Anyone else go on the march when he was sacked?

YES

My father, now sadly deceased remembered him starting his career at Huddersfield Town.

Top man

I used to do his accounts when I worked for John Tuffin in Ship Street

Top bloke indeed, although all he's ever shown an interest in when I go in his shop is chatting up my mrs!

I won't forget a visit to Brighton that I had from a lovely American girl I was seeing - FA Cup third round day and a massive of a storm blowing in Brighton (we were already out of the cup, bien sur). Taking refuge from the weather in the great man's rock shop where he was listening to Radio 5, he schmoozed the hell out of her (and, in a different way, me) with a tale of his playing for Coventry and beating, I think, Villa in the FA Cup, a result which necessitated a replay. This lengthy but very enjoyable anecdote was illustrated with punches in the air and enthusiastic joyous swearing from the man himself, which I LOVED.

The girl didn't have the first idea who this man was or what he was on about. The man's a GOD.

The man is obviously a turncoat as I believe he now bleeds dark blue and white rather than skyblue :)

My favourite Albion manager as he really seemed to be one of us with his enthusiasm. Such a shame he never managed to finish his team building as he was putting together a very CHEAP and good side for a push to return to Division 1.

Was it boring boring Bedson in charge at the time?

One of my first memories of the goldstone is him walking past the South Stand (after coming in from warming up) leaning over and stealing a handful of popcorn from my packet.

Hello, Thank you for a Very very interesting read, I've been doing some family tree research lately and found out that Chris Cattlin, is infact my Grandads Brother. And this was a great little insight into what sort of a man he was and is.

You're welcome, Fribb. Maybe you can point this thread out to him and he'll be able to see (as if he didn't know already) how highly regarded he is.

Your Great Uncle, for it is he, is an absolute legend and one of the nicest people you will have the honour to meet. It was an absolute delight to see him back at Brighton for the Cov game. The fact he is still held in such high regard, even 30 years on is testament to his popularity.

Over there
I was 13 when C.C was sacked, I was gutted and sat by the radio at my nan and grandads every night listening to the Albion phone in's and all the protests to his sacking. Everyone was furious with the board because he was building a good team, and mullery came along. I was going to turn up at the goldstone with a banner that read "8 out 10 fans say they prefer cats" a play on the old kitekat ads at the time.

I remember being stunned - at a distance - when he was sacked. Didn't seem to be any sense in it at all.

He was an excellent player and manager, and if I'm in town and looking to buy presents for folk they always get Cattlin rock.

He did,after all.

This. All of this. I bloody loved Chris Cattlin as a manager. Looking back on it, he'd have got us promoted if he'd not been sacked by the mongs running the club. He brought some absolutely class players to this club for peanuts, some of whom turned into top drawer players at the highest level - Danny Wilson, Eric Young and Dean Saunders in particular. Yet as far as I can recall, he only dropped a bollock on the transfer market once, when he let Ian Muir go to Tranmere when we should've kept him.

My favourite Albion manager of all time, passionate and above all a brilliant manager, also used to go and see him in his rock shop when in Brighton. Always willing to have a chat about the Albion, true legend.

Not sure if it's still available, but it's worth listening to his appearance on The Albion Roar.

And I think he's more Coventry-orientated these days, but that could just be me reading too much between the lines. Doesn't of course detract from the fact that he is still an Albion legend for his efforts both on and off the pitch.

Was there a pitch invasion as well? I'm too young to remember (I was 5 or 6 at the time) but I'm sure my Dad told me there was a pitch invasion in protest at his sacking and that he (my Dad) was clearly visible in the photo on the front page of the Argus the next day.
