Load of bollocks !!

I had severe sinusitis a few years back, and decided to try one of these chinese medicine shops.

After a 10 minute consultation they recommended various remedies which cost me over £30!

Needless to say they did not work !

Agreed - and some of the herbs can be dangerous if not kept properly. Seem to remember a few places in Brighton getting shut down after people died.

I had a really bad lower back strain a few years ago and my GP, who was also a trained acupuncturist, offered me acupuncture. It was an almost instant cure and from being unable to dress myself and drive a car, I was back at work in 24 hours.

The vet in Burwash used to do it on dogs.

I was briefly a member of the Young Farmers and the presentation one evening consisted of him of needling up a Greyhound.

I've got something wrong with the nerves in my arm which will probably never get better and considered having it done.

But I was advised by a doctor (Fulham FC's I seem to recall) that doing so could actually make the pain much worse.

As far as my understanding goes (and I am not arrogant enough to think I know very much about it at all), acupunture is a placebo, but placebos do work, so if it works for you then that's a good thing.

Anyone read the book 'Bad Science' by the man who does the column of the same name in the Guardian? It has a lot of interesting points about 'alternative therapies', his dismantling of homeopathy is particularly good.

Depends where you go. I've suffered from eczema down the years, and as is typical with this, it's sometimes clear, sometimes very manageable, but I have had bouts of it being completely out of control.

Years and years ago I used to go to a little place in Chinatown, literally one road past Leicester Sq, off Charing Cross Road. They had a little waiting room and consultancy rooms like a doctors surgery. They inspected, talked through your problems, and the medicine was put together by a guy taking things out of jars like an old style sweet shop. Each "packet" was a days medicine, and it contained what looked like the landscape of a woodland, and you had to boil it all up and make a cup of tea from it. It tasted absolutely disgusted, by far the most digusting thing I've ever tasted, but it was absolutely brilliant. Clensing the body (and skin) from the inside, was the theory and it was truly amazing. Took my eczema from it's worst ever (and that's saying something) to being completely clear in 7-10 days. Cost, about £100, and we're talking 15 years ago.

Then, more recently, I tried one of the little health food style shops on the High Street (Dartford) that claimed to also be "Chinese Medicine". Well, you spoke to the woman on the counter for about 2 minutes, she then sold you a pre-packed container of tablets, which did absolutely nothing. Cost, about £20.

It certainly appeared to me that you get what you pay for.

I'm undecided about it, but it is an area rich for humour.

This has probably been posted before, but it's worth another look :)
