I'm going to sound like a shocking snob now, Fiveways is a weird area in as much as it's on the cusp of two social groups. To the west of Fiveways is the upwardly aspirational areas of Preston Drove, Stanford Avenue, Southdown Avenue - with people who have moved down from London etc - and all streets inbetween. To the east is Hollingdean. For the locals.

So the decor and food is like the one at Seven Dials, definitely 'aspirational'. The clientele, however...

I think I'll stop my snobbery there.

Fiveways is odd indeed. I'm not right keen. Feels very seperate from everything. I lived on the Dials for about 8 years and liked it a lot.

The Sportsman no longer has a play area - they turned it into the smoking area! But still lets kids in.
The George near the bottom of Trafalger street lets kids in but is a Veggie menu only pub.
The Lord Nelson lets kids in, also on Trafalger Street, but not sure if they do food in the evening.
I'm told you can take the kids in the Park View 1/2 way up Preston drove.

Yes, best had you stuck up prig.

I have spoken before of my love for Hollingdean, the sweeping majesty of the Stevens Road flats, the condom strewn and elegant chip wrapper blown pavements of the dip, glistening in the streetglow like the dead skin of a still wet eel.

Ah, Hollingdean, thy very name is festering, brooding beauty, the Happy Shopper standing on the Corner of Roedale Road defying Beaney the Bookmaker on the opposite corner to make its move, like two love- struck gunfighters of the Old West.

*sob*

Ah, Hollingdean

When my kids were smaller, we tended to find busier, noisier restaurants were better, so all the cheap and cheerful italians (Pinochios, Donatello etc etc), with probably Al Duomo in Brighton and Otello in Hove as the ones we used most.

The only other thing we found was that you could only entertain them long enough for two courses, starter/main or main/desert. Anything longer than that and you were really pushing your luck.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I love it at Fiveways, a superb butcher, baker (there's even a Forfars you can ignore) and greengrocer. And The Tin Drum is good, if you can avoid the lunkheads and their munting missuses.

The Coopers Arms in Crowborough. Whilst I accept that this isn't strictly in Brighton, Dave the landlord always guarantee's you a warm welcome.

thats really nice, though I think the bit where he said "in Brighton" might rule your selection out

I know an excellent pub in Worcester for food as well, they give you a warm welcome, have nice food, and a log fire if anyones interested
