Can't recommend it highly enough. One of my favourite cities and in the USA's top four or five, beaten only by SF, New Orleans , NYC and maybe LA (and I'd say Miami because I've lived there but I don't rate it as a short break destination).

Great bars and restaurants, great for sports, incredible architecture, as others have pointed out. Obviously ride the El, best route is north from the Loop towards Belmont, the area just south of Wrigley Field. Lots of interesting shops and places to eat and drink around there.

Lou Malnati's in the Northern suburbs for a deep dish pizza is definitely worth a visit.

FYI, there is a Lou Malnati's just north of the Chicago River on N. Wells St. Wells is the street with the train tracks above it on the west side of the Loop. Find it. go north of the river and it's on the right. I can honestly only eat 2 pieces of the pizza and I'm done.

I feel I'm being a bit dishonest. I feel I must express the undesirable side of Chicago also.

I ordered a large. It got me through dinner and then breakfast and lunch the next day!

Ride the loop on the 'L' :moo:

Start around the 20 minute mark for the Loop section of this Brown Line train.

The train is coming in from the north and goes over the Chicago River above Wells St and then "loops" the downtown.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdDL83pfkXo

The Loop is Wells on the west, Van Buren on the south, Wabash on the east and Lake St. on the north. The Brown line train then exits the Loop by going north (turning right at Lake and Wells) going out the same way it came in. The last thing on the video is pulling into the Merchandise Mart station just north of the Chicago River above Wells. If going to Lou Mulnati's Deep Dish Pizza you would exit the train at that station and walk north along Wells (east side of the street) cross Hubbard St and it is on the right between Hubbard & Illinois St.

BTW, one of the detectives reminded me there is a Lou Mulnati's on the south end of the downtown on State St just south of Eighth St on the east side of State.

This is the Blue line train that comes from O'Hare Airport along the I-90 expressway (the Kennedy) into the Loop (in the Loop it is underground) then it goes west along the I-290 Expressway (the Eisenhower) to it's far western point which is Forest Park.

This is the Orange line train that comes from Midway Airport into the Loop (it circles along the same tracks--opposite direction--as the Brown line) and then heads back to Midway Airport. The Orange Line train enters the Loop along Wabash Ave and then turns left at Wabash and Van Buren and goes west along Van Buren.. Then turns north at Van Buren and Wells. It goes north on Wells and then turns east at Wells and Lake and goes east on Lake. Then it turns south at Lake and Wabash and goes south on Wabash and leaves the Loop along Wabash Ave.

Both airports have well marked signage for how to get to the CTA station in the airports. O'Hare is bigger so it takes a little longer to walk to the CTA station. Cost is $3.00 (about £2) for first ride and $2.50 (about £1,60) for each ride after that. You may use a credit card now at one of the ticket machines. You would want to pay for as many rides as you need on the one CTA card. (Ventra is the name of the company that operates the ticket machines) If you must buy another CTA card Ventra charges you $3.00 again for the first ride.
