Tangentially related - I’m off to Benidorm Wednesday night with the single goal of watching two days of Cheltenham in the sun drinking and gambling with an old friend.

Benidorm is all the rage this year! I don't blame you.. I did the same thing about 15 years ago... I went to Vegas expecting to watch the racing on the sport book areas... sadly they didn't show any cheltenham racing and all my betting sites were blocked... Spain is different

My thoughts?

Six horses died on the course last year. In addition to the those that were destroyed during the selection process for "race quality" ones

Not the way to treat these noble animals purely for people to place a bet, in my opinion.

Cheltenham Chief Exec admits lower crowds this year - even 25yrs ago sharing someone's living room with 8 blokes was extortionate!

I attended regularly when it was 3 days, did the first year of 4 days and thought sod this and have done the Costa Del Sol frequently since.

It's probably cheaper and the bars of Fuengirola, Benalmadena etc are for more pleasant than playing sardines in Spoons in Cheltenham town centre every night!

I know a few people who used to go for the whole festival when it was three days. Once it got expanded to four and the costs kept going up, they started only going for a couple of days and have now given up completely.

The cost of accommodation, tickets, transport etc is just too high to justify and also they found it less enjoyable as too many people are just there as a social event rather than proper racing fans these days.

The Going..

Extremely important.

A friend of mine has said they've watered the track over the weekend.
Today's weather here in Cheltenham is drizzle and possible light rain.
Tuesday/Wednesday going maybe Soft, good to soft.
Thursday probably good to soft
Friday good to soft, good.

Looking forward to it - my favourite jumps festival of the year although I love Goodwood festival in the flat season on a summers day overlooking the downs more than any.

Sky Lord at 66/1 taking some extra place sites is my EW bet tomorrow - a few expecting it to run well.

Tony Bloom has 2 horses running on Wednesday.

Energuneme 4.00 Queen Mother champion chase 15/2

Bunting 2.40 Coral cup 9/1
Top work @slimes :clap2:

Pretty safe to assume TB won't be planning on coming home empty-handed on Wednesday. So a couple of single e/w bets would seem to be in order, plus maybe a speculative e/w double (or form the basis of an e/w trixie or patent)

As regards the going, I saw the clerk of the course on racing tv this morning with the going stick and it’s good to soft if that- certainly no softer and the drizzle was not enough to make a difference

With dry sunny days and overnight watering it could be that the course is quicker later in the afternoon than at the start of each day.

They are watering extra on the new course apparently as forecast of frost means they won’t be able to water later in the week

Think it will be quite lively ground

The Tony Bloom-owned and Willie Mullins-trained Bunting has been a notable mover in the Coral Cup on Wednesday.

Paul Townend rides just two handicappers across the first two days but Bunting is one of them after he featured in the full field of 26 for the 2m5f handicap hurdle.

Bunting finished seventh in the Triumph Hurdle behind stablemate Majborough last season and his sole start over hurdles this season came when second to fellow Coral Cup runner Beckett Rock at Clonmel in January.

The lightly raced five-year-old was 14-1 for the Coral Cup this morning but is now a best-price 13-2 with bet365. Bleu Berry was Mullins' sole Coral Cup winner in 2018.

Kopek De Bordes has by far the best form in the book but apart from being a short price he was very fizzy before his last race at the Dublin festival and the atmosphere before the Supreme will be at boiling point. He is also wearing a hood for the first time and that doesn’t fill me with confidence. ROMEO COOLIO E/W at 7/1 looks the best option here for me.

14.00
I can’t see past MAJBOROUGH here and he should win without any fuss. Odds On and not a betting option for most but I would expect to see some massive bets recorded in the following day’s Racing Post as the big boys wade in on course !!

14.40
Difficult race and I’ve been going round in circles so I won’t be having a bet and can’t even narrow it down.

15.20
Lossiemouth runs here instead of in the Champion after some dubious runs this season and I think if she was showing anything like her best at home she wouldn’t be in this race. I’m taking her on with JOYEUSE E/W at 11/1

16.00
CONSTITUTION HILL to beat BrighterDaysAhead

16.40
Another difficult race and I take Gavin Cromwell’s TOTAL LOOK to improve on better ground, the trainer is a very shrewd operator and 7/1 E/W looks fair as he doesn’t really need to improve much in the first place.

17.20
Best bet of the day in the last for me as I will be on this favourite HAITI COULEURS at 4/1

My friend works there and said

We watered it’ll be soft good to soft first two days then probably good to soft into good by Friday.

I'm just relaying his message.

Energuneme needs soft so maybe there is hope.

Bunting was entered in 3 races and as soon as he was declared he was backed into 9/1.. now even shorter..
