There are rumours circulating on Twitter that we’re going to be playing Chelsea in a behind closed doors friendly. Has anyone else heard anything?

I think Todd is referring to it as a private viewing of Brighton’s merchandise!

Seems so. Very odd. I mean, not odd to be keeping players match fit, but Chelsea?!

Assuming the club will make a statement if this is true to at least try and justify it some how?

"Footballers need to play football. Most teams are playing this weekend. Chelsea aren't. So we play against Chelsea."

I think people expect and want Tony Bloom & Paul Barber to feel like they do, but probably they're not.

if thats the reasoning, there's another 4 teams not playing. we could play Man U, Liverpool, Leeds or Palace.

I very much agree with the thrust of your point about B&HA fans projecting their feelings of betrayal onto B&B, but is this a quotation from the club or merely one you've concocted?
I can think of many good reasons why both Chelsea and Brighton would want to play a game this w/e, and it isn't beyond the realms that they'd play against each other but I'm not going to give it any credit without some clear steer from either the club or those that have access to the club and are trusted sources of info (eg Naylor, Owen, etc)

In most of the games behind closed-doors, the opponent has been a team pretty close by.

Another requirement is obviously that the potential opponent actually wants to play a friendly right now, which may not be the case for each or any of these teams.

Because playing Palace on the weekend we were meant to be playing Palace but now aren't wouldn't be irritating for the fans at all.

Presumably we're not playing the others because they're much less convenient/not interested.

Not a real quote, just the reasoning, I imagine. If there is actually a game, that is.

It's a chance for Caicedo, Trossard, Enciso, Mac Allister, Estupiñán, Sánchez & Mwepu

too get to know their future team mates better.

Or for the Albion to let GP know there’s a way back to complete the project if things go pear shaped at both clubs over the next few months….

It would make a lot of sense all round except the styles are likely to be mirror images of each other rather than the kind of thing we’d come up against from the other 18 teams in the league.

sure it would be weird, then so would Man U/Leeds. Man U to play a friendly with Liverpool?
just seeing there are other options if the reasoning is to have a game for fitness. Brighton/Leeds, Palace/ManU, Chelsea/Liverpool, call it the South-North Multi-match. :jester:
