Over time, I’ve tried my very best to share other fans’ admiration and respect for Potter but against all my zen traits and wish to always see the best in everyone, I just can‘t shake off my judgement of him:

This slightly aloof, moderately smug and salty individual who regarded the Albion job as nothing more than a career step to the promised land. I never felt the love.

With a war chest in the gazillions and with a recruitment market as wide as the five oceans, Potter could literally go ANYWHERE to swell his army, but he seems hellbent on sinking the boot into the Albion and to not only weaken us but to even cripple us…

I genuinely hope I’m wrong.
Sadly, I don't think you're wrong. As far as I'm concerned, Gary Potter can do one.

Who?

I don't think anyone really blamed GP for jumping at the chance of managing Chelsea. Bigger club, Champions League football, bumper payrise etc, who wouldn't ? I was disappointed he took the job, but it wasn't difficult to understand why he would. And on that basis, I'd have applauded him back to the Amex dugout on Saturday in appreciation of what he achieved at my club. I'll give Cucurella a cheer as well.

However.

GP has since returned to the Amex and completely gutted the backroom team at BHA. And with reports of talks with Winstanley now taking place, he is continuing to do so. When a manager departs, you expect him to take along his No2 and maybe a first team coach or two. But since GP has gone, BHA has been systematically RANSACKED by GP and that vile leech of a football club, and it has totally derailed our season. Not that Potter gives a flying one about that.

And thats why I will be BOOOOOing him to his seat on Saturday.

I don't think it's deliberate. Managers just want to work with good people that they already know. It always happens in football. We can't say that he ever pretended that he felt the same way about our football team as we do and, to be honest, I kind of respected that. It's easier, but more dishonest to suck up to fans. I suppose that he didn't really have to make it quite so obvious that he shared football's view of us as arriviste minnows lucky to be having our moment, but he didn't owe us anything.

I'd argue that he perhaps owed Tony Bloom something, but we also know that Tony himself didn't let emotion get in the way of his decision to sack Chris Hughton. With his dignity and humanity throughout the experience of keeping us up, promotion, missing promotion, the Shoreham air disaster and the death of AK's dad, Chris felt far more emotionally embedded within the club, but Tony made the decision that suited his needs. I don't think that he blames any of his staff for doing the same. He's probably a mite frustrated that the game is rigged and that Poyet's 'ceiling' doesn't exist for individuals, but definitely does for clubs that refuse to gamble their future on a massive long shot.

Agreed, but clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle will be after better players than we require. Neither of the players you mentioned would have been of interest to Chelsea at the time. We are fishing in different pools.

No. It’s widely known that Boehly is after a club abroad in which they can send players to. It’s more than just our personal they are taking, they’re taking our ways of finding and developing talent.

Maybe Potter knows his limitations and knows the small success he had here, wasn't all his own doing but down to what the club had been building so any chance he could ever have success elsewhere, he had to take the whole team with him.
I won't be giving any of them a warm welcome.

I'm pretty sure BHA didn't invent the multi-club model

it doesn’t really work like that. He took his first team coaching staff. By your own example the fact Villa sacked Gerrard + 5 is harsh then ? Or surely Roberts & Bruno should have gone with Hughton ?

Not a Brighton unique thing... City Group owned a few clubs and Matthew Benham owned FC Midtjylland before TB bought USG.

You can’t go round shouting about how great we are, how amazing our recruitment is and how well run we are without expecting to be head hunted 🤷🏻‍♂️

At times like these there really are only 2 people to ask for inspiration.

Terrance & Phillip:-

"Shut your ******* face Graham Potter
Shut your ******* face Graham Potter".

I would post the link, but best not.

It was always going to happen one day, a top 6 club were going to look at how Bloom does things and realise it can be scaled up for what they need. It just hurts that rather than finding their own people to do it they've come in and taken all of ours.
Maybe Potter knows his limitations and knows the small success he had here, wasn't all his own doing but down to what the club had been building so any chance he could ever have success elsewhere, he had to take the whole team with him.

Reid, Hamburg and Macauly were with him at Östersunds and Swansea. Potter was always going to take them with him as they are his trusted inner circle, obviously they've already contributed to the success he had in Sweden.

No club will be able to take the driving force behind any success we've had because that's Tony Bloom. They can try to copy what he does, take the people he has doing it for him, but he'll find new ways to work things to his advantage.

You're comparing apples with oranges though. Gerrard was sacked, Potter was poached. Thats a fairly fundamental difference.

To the best of my knowledge BHA had no intention of sacking any of the coaching staff, or on top of that, getting rid of their recruitment team. The arrival of De Zerbi may possibly have seen the exit of some of the coaching staff as he brought his own men in, who's to say. But they'd have had their contracts paid up in full.

I'm not really sure of the point you're making tbh.

They didn't have to go with him. But the same rule applies to Bruno, Roberts, et al as it did to Potter: 'Champions League football, bumper payrise, etc'.

I've no problem with what he – or any of the others – did and I won't be booing him/them. What's the point?

We did the same thing by sacking Trollope & Nevan when Hughton went. Because Potter would want to bring his own team from Swansea.

It’s the real world how things go and how employment law works. These are all grown men who are capable of making their own decisions

I don’t really understand the thinking that people can only get new jobs if they’re sacked or resign first.

Whats the point of anything. Football doesn't have to be rational.

My nose has been put out of joint by Chelsea systematically asset-stripping BHA of a huge chunk of the off-field talent we had assembled over a number of years. They have now likely set us back years. Thats pissed me off. Can I understand it ? Yeah. Do I have to like it ? * checks notes *

Nope.

If booing him means that Saturday's Amex has an atmosphere that helps us beat Chelsea, then I can't see an issue. Within the usually acceptable realms of the panto that is a football match, his feelings are secondary to our ambitions. He is hardly in a position to say that this is unfair. What's sauce for the goose...

Harty's article's pearl clutching label of anyone doing it as not 'a proper Brighton fan' is just silly.

Bruno was playing under CH and retired in what turned out to be his last game in charge. Bruno was actually appointed to the coaching setup by Potter after he arrived, so in that respect he is one of Potters boys, although I am sure TB probably put in a very good word for that to happen.
