[Football] Cheer up - January's Actually Been Good For Us

Since we lost to Arsenal at the end of last year, most teams in the bottom half have played 4 times. Newcastle have played 6. In that time Arsenal have shot up the league and are not in the bottom half anymore. Here's how the other 9 have got on.

Should January's points return continue for the remaining games (obviously it won't, the game sample is very small and isn't adjusted for the quality of the opposition played) this would be the final table. We would reach the 40 point mark:

I just thought it was worth mentioning given all of the self flagellating messages following last night's result when, like Spurs, Southampton & Liverpool in the last couple of months, we failed to beat, but didn't lose to Fulham. As we all know, it's a marathon, not a sprint and over the last month, although we've not changed our position in the race, we have closed the gap on a few in front of us and got further away from some behind.

The big question for me is "How many more points will Fulham get this season?"

Subtract 4 from that answer and that becomes our target.


Worst case is Fulham get 24 more points ( very unlikely ) meaning we need 20 more.

Newcastle's drop in results since the turn of the year is reminiscent of the 2019 fall that cost Chris Hughton his job. They were getting points at the beginning of the season, but with an Xg of just over 1, same as we were. Like us that year, they were sitting in mid table when the goals dried up. The Xg didn't change significantly for us, it's just that we stopped out performing it. Their pattern looks the same. This week's goal against Leeds was only their second in seven league games. Both goals came in defeats. They have a long time to turn it around and do have some creative players returning who could see them return to over performing the Xg, but walking that tightrope is bound to lead to a fall eventually and seems the reason why Tony Bloom decided to change things. All he needs now is for his team to somehow stop under performing the Xg Points by double figures.

Current form table also shows that, despite the injury absences and the disappointment of not getting the win last night, we are currently gaining more points per game than most of the bottom half. Current form table also shows that, despite the injury absences and the disappointment of not getting the win last night, we are currently gaining more points per game than most of the bottom half.

Doing this without Lamptey, Welbeck & Lallana is certainly very impressive. Once those 3 are back firing on all cylinders next month, I think the wins will come more often than not.
