The power drains more quickly from those batteries than we think. Make sure you're going to use 36 AA batteries before half time to the expiration date.

Thanks for your reply, I checked the date on the package when I got home last night, it says March 2024. I don't think using them in half that time will be an issue, a lot will go in my Christmas lighting, the rest the kids will use.

Don't forget, once they start to fail in a remote control it is imperative to point the remote out at arm's length, pressing the button really hard with a contorted face.

Or take them out, swap them round and put them back in again.

75% of the time, it works EVERY time.

These are fine for remotes etc, last for a good time and cheap as chips. Plus, you get the added bonus of a day out in Purley so a trip around leafy Croydon is always an option.

I have 50+ AA and AAA rechargeables. I think in 5 years I have had to throw away one AAA battery, so they are pretty reliable. The majority of mine are Maplins. They have two own brand lines NiMH and Hybrid. The NiMH lose their charge over time, so if you don't use them, you need to recharge them, the hybrid are less of a problem. I also have some Tronic's which Lidl sometimes sell and these perform well and are dirt cheap. Basically I wouldn't get hung up on "quality" brands. A decent charger and a power meter adn away you go.

I used to rely heavily on rechargeables, AAA, AA, C & D cells, with 2 rechargers to keep on top of it all - with 2 young kids, we had a lot of stuff that needed batteries. I'm keen on sustainability so it seemed the best option.

However, I've given up on that. The fact that rechargeable batteries have a lower voltage than their disposable versions became a sticking point for a number of appliances, plus the rechargeable ones seemed to ‘fail’ quite quickly, and despite making every effort to avoid it, lost their charge depth quickly, means I now buy my batteries from Maplins, usually when they have special offers on, and everything is so much simpler, and I know that everything will work.

Shame…

I know that there is a new type of domestic rechargeable battery on the way, which has a 1.5V output, and better cycles – if they are economic I’ll go back there.

The cheap batteries physically have less chemicals inside them - they weigh less, which is a fairly obvious sign.

Duracell do about five price levels, each does actually have more chemical inside but I wouldn't be confident its a direct price to life ratio.

This combined with a quick rub of the batteries is always a winner.
The pointy end needs to be frantically rubbed on a short carpet.

It's as good as buying new.

I always find that putting both together and then rubbing them between your two palms works great. It needs to make the satisfying knocking noise for it to work... I assume this is the sound of power being regenerated?

Why would most police departments be interested in decoding the manufacture date of a battery?

Sorry to be confusing. I believe someone came up with the equation that halfway through the shelf life the battery was no longer good enough to be used. I'm sure it was all arbitrary but it somehow stuck.

Man alive, can I have your batteries when you've finished with them.
The minutes of power you've recklessly thrown out could have easily powered a rapid switch away from porn.
