And no one is disputing he has a massive block when it comes to scoring goals, least of all me - but I am not ready to dismiss the whole player because of this aspect of his play which would seem a bit harsh to me. If we had paid £xm for him to be a no.9, I think there would be a really good argument for dropping him from the squad completely (he doesnt always start as it is) and even immediately, but he isn’t, not even a forward, he’s a LWB primarily defensive midfielder but with good dribbling skills and decent pace to provide some wide forward momentum - and, as I said in my original response, managers would not have regularly played him unless they felt he was (in the context of what we have currently available) providing an adequate/good role on other areas of the pitch. A lot of mistakes were made in the last 5 metres against Charlton and in the pens which cost us heavily but they weren’t all Solly’s.
Moving on - The real issue IMHO is that we just don’t have the depth in the squad or quality yet that we and I am sure RDZ wants. However, it’s a work in progress, the team is still in transition but no one can doubt we are steadily moving in the right direction (and actually have been for some years) - as the standard of the team improves though, eventually, with some players, their repeated ‘mistakes’ will be seen for what they actually are, a shortage of the necessary talent which the squad needs if it is to progress further than treading water in the top 10 and I can think of several players that could fall into that category but unless BHA suddenly has a massive injection of silly sheik money, how we deal with that will be piecemeal and slower than many of us would probably prefer.
Personally I think RDZ’s style of football (which I love!) and what he is doing with the team will put more emphasis on buying in attacking midfielders who can play wide to assist and even provide the main goal scoring action - the signing of Buonanotte for example would indicate that. Maybe too, RDZs style of play has highlighted even further Solly’s deficiencies in this area? January might see some reorganisation and if not January, certainly by the end of the summer, I think the team will be looking more like the shape RDZ is looking for (even if it is minus Tross, Mackie and Lamptey because we cant afford to ward off top team transfer swoops). Sorry to be a bit of a Pollyanna here and I realise by the negative or non reaction to my posts, I am probably alone in my point of view but there does seem to be a Chicken Licken mentality among some Brighton fans every time we loose to a team that we should comfortably beat and a firing squad ready every time a player has a bad game.

At the end of the day, once again we're out of a cup because we didn't field our strongest team. We put out a weakend team which we no doubt believed would be strong enough, but once again we were wrong.
Sadly we went out of the Papa Johns trophy for the same reason. Some of our 'senior' U21s were not included, and we could even have spiced up the team with the likes of Gilmour, Colwill, Enciso and even Caicedo (who I'm pretty sure still counts as an U21). I think we're even allowed a couple of over-age players in a Papa Johns team, and it would have been lovely to win a trophy sometime in my lifetime.
Could we not, please, start playing the very strongest team we could possibly put out in cup competitions - whatever cup. We look safe from relegation for the time being, and we're never going to win the league, so why not put the cups first?

Surely no Brighton fan would be happy with winning the Papa Johns Trophy ? Even more so by putting out first teamers

As a final footnote on the Charlton match i was reflecting today on how my experience could be summed up by two chants i heard on the day.
Before the game excited feelings at the return of real football with the Albion and our fans singing " We're Brighton and Hove Albion, we won the world cup"
After the penalty shootout( or should that be missout) leaving the ground via Floyd road and hearing "Premier league, you're having a laugh"

Nope, although I do show a slight interest in the group stages, any U21 side winning it is just wrong and that type of thing wouldn’t interest me at all.

Yep, extra pre-restart run-out possibly gives us a bit of an edge over teams not involved. Still a bit irritated that we blew a decent chance of doing something in a fairly open competition though.
True, this must have been the case. The non-starting "strong players" - Mitoma, Trossard and Pervis - really showed their superior class when coming on.
