Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life

All that 'religious' STUFF seems still to be going strong though. ;)

That's because people find it almost impossible to deal with the alternative.

People don't want to accept or even consider that there is no God; that there is nothing after this life; that their much-loved and lost relatives aren't waiting for them in heaven; that they won't be rewarded for good works in the next life; that all that time they spend talking to God, while therapeutic, might as well have been directed to the wall etc etc.

So you know for a fact that there is no afterlife

As rational sentient beings its nice to think there is an afterlife. Lots of people hold the view that after life how can all these experiences and memories and knowedge just fade away and die ? They seem to think that our "Spirit" ascends to a higher astral plane etc..

I just have a feeling that if there is such a thing, there are going to be an awful lot of Cattle,Battery Chickens, Pigs etc who are looking to settle a score or two !

I am humbled at your great show of FAITH ;)

The first book was The Colour of Magic and introduced The Unseen University and its rather inept student, Rincewind.

The Discworld series books are great satires on modern life and are completely different to the "Adventure/Mystery" style Harry Potter series.... unfortunately, in a trailer, in a trailer park in Arkansas, there is some poor saddo who...

I have started to read the discworld books from start to finish as the chances are Nation is his last book:down::down::down:

Just started Guards Guards again

You know for a fact there is?

You might as well say - and tell lots of other people - that when we die we will be met by a chorus of dancing pandas. There's about as much proof of that.

The fact is that you can't prove it either way. i like the idea of dancing pandas

There is a study going on at present investigating near death experience. Will be interesting to see what they come up with

Ah - FAITH. The word people use when they can't explain something. I quite like the idea of the dancing pandas though, so maybe I could have FAITH that will happen when I die. :)

Can I join the dancing panda cult. I am sure there is lots of money to be made.

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent and omnipotent God would have designedly created parasitic wasps with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of Caterpillars.

Charles Darwin 1809 - 1882

There is an exhibition currently at the NHM and it runs until 19th April.

Darwin - Big idea big exhibition

Almost precisely.

Hence the reason I used it to answer your earlier statements. ;)

Science v Theology, one of the great debates of the last 500 years.

I am sure NSC can sort it out in 48 hours!

I don't see that quote from Darwin being anything more than an argument in favour of evolution. It certainly isn't an argument against the existence of God. If you think it is, I believe you have misunderstood him.

There was a major exhibition on Darwin at the Royal Ontario Museum last year. I don't know if it is the same one or not. The one in Toronto was SPONSORED by my church's magazine. I find it incredibly mindboggling that in this day and age people somehow think all Christians have a problem with Darwin. As I have stated many times before on here (but which everyone seems to ignore), in my line of work I have yet to meet ANYONE who says they have a problem with evolution/dinosaurs/Darwin.
