David Attenborough is a superb presenter.

Shows such as his were what TV is perfect for, not the celebrity based dross on so many channels these days.

TV will be a lesser place once he's gone.

Most Christians have managed to adapt their views now to accommadate the logical and well researched understanding of evolution. I knew a Catholic priest who accepted evolution rather than Creationism by suggesting, in simple terms, that God was responsible for the "Big Bang" where the universe and ergo, life started. known as Intelligent Design

More worrying is the fact that the majority of schools and some universities in the U.S. still teaching Creationism as the standard sylabus despite all the obvious scientific evidence to contradict it .

The reason I mentioned it was that DA said last week that he got hate mail from Christians whenever he did one of his programmes and didn't mention God. I imagine that a programme specifically designed to cut God out of the scheme would generate even more abusive mail.

Funnily enough, I remember having a similar conversation when I used to go as a believer with the vicar and he was a very old school Christian, but he believed in natual selection, although he was convinced in the "grand design" theory, ie God was the hand that clapped to kick off the Big Bang ( as Veggie says).

BTW I sing in a choir where the vicar of the church we sing in on Good Friday has banned us from singing "Zadok the Priest" ( the music used in teh Champions League opening and closing titles) because the word alleluia is sung. Seemly not appropriate in holy week.

I read that Terry Pratchett gets hatemail from Harry Potter fans because they mistakenly believe that he nicked the idea of a School for Wizards off Rowling....this despite Pratchetts first book being written 14 years previous to the fragrant coffee drinkers

Intelligent Design is the biggest cop out EVER. It's like saying "Ok we now believe that you have irrefutable scientific evidence for the way things are, BUT we just want to add our own gobbledygook, for which there is NO scientific evidence, on top of it.

I can completely understand his viewpoint - Zadok The Priest was written as a celebratory anthem for a coronation - 'and all the people rejoiced...' - it seems entirely inappropriate for Good Friday to me.

as it was explained.

I didnt realise at the time and just thought it was a bit pathetic really. You could argue that as Jesus was born to die taking all our sins with him, that was something to celebrate surely

We have instead decided to do some anthems from the Messiah.

I pity the aimiable simpletons who state that an entity unprovable by its very nature did it all. Because the reality is so much more intriguing and fascinating and worthy of study. And yes, that programme put that across entirely perfectly.

Well you can't actually prove it since we haven't actually seen it happen but there is enough fossels and STUFF to make a logical assumption that it is the way animals developed.

Yeah, I like all that scientific "STUFF" - there seems to be a lot of it about these days. All that 'religious' STUFF seems still to be going strong though. ;)

If there's one word I'm especially cautious of, it's the word - FACT. Scientists seem to thrive on it though.

The first book was The Colour of Magic and introduced The Unseen University and its rather inept student, Rincewind.

The Discworld series books are great satires on modern life and are completely different to the "Adventure/Mystery" style Harry Potter series.... unfortunately, in a trailer, in a trailer park in Arkansas, there is some poor saddo who...

If you want to look at the cellular level then I'd propose spontaneous DNA mutation and microbial transformation.

Cellular organelles, in particular Chloroplasts
