[Albion] Characters from The Goldstone North Stand - early eighties

Worth an ask, anyone know what happened to an old mate of mine called Mark Baker? When i first started watching the Albion at school in '87 I used to go with him in the East Stand sometimes the North. Lost touch when he moved to Milton Keynes and he used to travel to all the aways in the last years of the Goldstone (getting on the Seagulls Express at MK I believe). I was back in touch with him during the Withdean years when I heard he lost his dad to suicide and he left work at Royal Mail due to stress. Later got him a ticket with us for the first game at the Amex but by then he wasn't a fan of big crowds, was becoming ever more reclusive - recent 10 years or so he's gone absent again, no longer responded to phonecalls, might have moved. Would like to know he is ok.

Guppy is Albion through and through.......

One favourite Guppy moment was in Stockholm for an England away, me and chums took a short cut through a shopping centre to the stadium. Walking through the shopping centre we became aware of an incident on the ground floor in a bar that the whole centre was watching. About 40 police were trying to explain to one guy he needed to leave , this was Guppy. He had a pint of Guiness and was in full argumentative move and had clearly no intention of going anywhere anytime soon

My favourite moment was bumping into a drunk Guppy at England away in Gothenburg..............he just said " hello.............what you doing here then"
How do you answer that?






Last time i saw him personally at the football was the semi at wembley.....but i hear he still goes
He can be spotted around Worthing if you have a keen eye

Was that the game where we'd not won away all season and then won there 3-2 (I think)? Ended up in the Buffet Car on the train from Ipswich to London, full of Brighton with Pete leading the singing and absolutely terrorising the other passengers. Someone would probably film it and put it on one of those away fan accounts on Twitter these days

Remember very well a guy called Jim Hanigan who used to start a lot of the chants in the North Stand in the late 70s. wonder what happened to him ?. Like others , I also recall Krispies at Withdean…..did his best to get things going in the South Stand.

I think that was a 3-1 victory in the 90/91 season. Perry Digweed was on the train coming back with us.

I got some comps for the main stand and we were told off by a policeman for making too much noise in the home fans. Different days. I just clap nowadays. Although I can clap loudly sometimes.

EDIT- No, you are meaning the 88/89 season. Albion won 3-2 at that one.

Someone I haven’t seen for many many years is Worthing Chris, I used to see him at every away match c late 80s. he had an issue with his spine and if I recall correctly, I saw him visit a few building sites I worked on, I think he worked in sales, or something like that, he wore a tie for work that I do recall. He was a friend of the late Richard Hanks and Andy H

One of the prominent and fearless members of ’The Bosun’. A leading figure in the mid to late 70’s from Eastbourne I think, at a time of shetland wool jumpers and pleated trousers.

Yep 19 Nov 1988 having googled it. We'd not won away at all that season until that game. It was an absolutely brilliant old school day out so I persuaded my mate at school to go to Hull with me for the next one. We lost 5-2.

Was at the 3-1 as well. I think that was the day one of the lads from an Albion supporting family of brothers decided to invade the pitch on his own. I'm good mates with his older brother who tells me that Saturday night in their house was pretty much a police hotline in those days. Which one's been nicked this time sort of thing.

Sadly Chris Evans passed away a few years ago of a heart attack.

He actually resided in Steyning, fun fact he was was a devout Catholic, I wonder if any of his confession sessions were Albion themed?

Anyone remember the fella we called the 'Mad Irishman'? Stood to right of goal near the front. Got very angry at our performances and would rant and wave his fists at the players. Had red hair and a red face which got redder the more angry he got. Always wore a brown check jacket (or suit).
