I was speaking to my uncle at work today and he told me there was a bloke who used to throw celery on the pitch at the goldstone, but had no idea why. Anyone else remember?

For 'a bloke', read 'quite a few in the North Stand', and it wasn't on the pitch - it was to each other.

Celery, celery
If she don't come
You tickle her bum
With a stick of celery

Celery was smuggled into the ground and used as a non offensive missile after knives , baseball bats , knuckledusters , axes and darts were banned.

It wasn't just one bloke, it became a craze, with everyone trying to smuggle celery into the ground, as the OB were on the look-out for it. I remember an away game at Brentford where we saw a local green grocers shop, and much to our frustration he'd sold out of celery. Poor bloke probably couldn't work out what teh HELL was going on, as fan after fan wandered min asking him for celery.

I remember my team doing this as well.

"we are the famous football team and we are eating Celery, Celery celery" and so forth. (Instead of going to Wembly.) when we were losing a FA cup tie.

Hope that helps.

Remember some being thrown round the south stand at withdean a few years ago: right at the end of the season. Along with an inflatable seagull which was surprisingly hard when it hit you on the head!

That's how I remember it except ...'famous BrightonOveAlbion'... instead of 'famous football team'

It came at a time when virtually anything was being banned from being taken into grounds in that it could be used as a weapon. Brilliant idea and the OB didn't quite know how to deal with it.

Good fun but I'm older now and glad that footie is no longer a game of 'them v us' in regards to plod.
