Heres how to detect whether they go near the trap

Put a frying pan on the floor with cooled cooking fat. Set your bait in the trap. If you see their little feet prints in the cooking fat like footprints in the snow then you know that you are using the incorrect bait. They have obviously been to the bait but haven't been tempted by it

I've found that this works a treat for mice. Elephants like it too, so it's handy if you get an infestation of those buggers as well.

Never saw anything on the news, about a recent infestation of elephants in EA!
They must get spooked by all the locals multi pointing at them :)

Don't bother with a cat, ours brings mice in. I then have to move the fridge and other appliances to get the poor little fellas out.

The mice and rats at the bottom of our garden activate the PIR light and then a Weirauch HW100 PCP air gun does the trick.
Definetly peanut butter though.

Must be lucky with my two cats then, they started to bring mice n birds into the house when they were young but after growling at them and pointing at the garden they now always take them onto the lawn. Where they play a sick game with the mouse, consisting of letting it go right in the middle and chasing it between themselves until it either dies from its injuries or heart attack...scenes. Often find decapitated mice sitting about, they tend to go over the wall to the neighbourino who never throws the footballs back over, tosser has had at least 20 balls of mine in past 10 years.

We used a plastic pre baited trap (big cheese ultra power I think) and caught 3 in 3 days and no trouble since. It's the location that's important it needs to be on their route. luckily we worked out exactly where they were coming in and so could locate it well. The edge of rooms works well.

Oh ye of little faith. The reason you've not seen anything on the news about an infestation is because I caught every last one of them, using peanut butter. As I say, elephants can't resist it. While on that topic, fruit bats love it too. None of them in EA either.

I rest my case.

A long time ago i worked for Rentokil exterminating anything that moved in South London (including Selhurst). Go to trap for mice was a sticky board (as others have mentioned) placed around edge of room, preferably under cover. Poison of choice was Alpha-chloralose for mice (not sure if you can still buy it) mixed with digestive biscuit crumbs. Never failed.

Is that not akin to foxhunting? And thereby, is it not illegal? And just to clarify, I am no animal rights campaigner.

They are pikeys rather than toffs in red coats shouting Tally Ho. Foxes can be shot by farmers as can dogs, if a danger to livestock. That way to kill rats is much better than using poisons on agricultural land.

Just been woken by the trap going off. Didn't use peanut butter in the end but put some of the bread crumbs and seeds from a multi-seed loaf down.

At least it was instant - no sign of a struggle. Can't get over how small it was and after clearing the whole thing away I'll have to see if this was just a single blighter.

I hate to tell you, but if you do have mice infestation in your house, there is only one truly reliable method in getting rid of them:

It worked for me.

Very unlikely to be just one.........

99.9% likely it isn't just one. If you're lucky it'll be 3-5; if unlucky, 60-70. No, I'm not joking.
