I was at Gatwick airport a couple of years back and visa shut down that day . Only people with cash could pay for car parking and be let out . It’s good to carry both .

Always have at least £50

Me too. Mostly use a card but always like to have some cash for tips etc, especially upon hearing that nearly two thirds of restaurants and pubs do not pass on tips to staff if they are paid on to the bill by card.

Also on occasions tills go down or like the pub the other night their card machine wasn't working so, No problem I just used a bit of cash.

£174 plus another £4.80 in the car ashtray for parking. I draw cash out of the machine in amounts to last a while
. I can never get my head round paying for anything under a 20 with a card,People who buy half a Lager or a newspaper with a phone or card really grind my gears,

The dull part of the south coast
Definitely a Generational thing.

Mrs Jakarta runs the local Church Magazine / Arts Group / Probus Group finances.

We still get loads of envelopes enclosing cheques for £10/15/20 - it seems unfair to tell these old ladies about how their subscriptions are propping up the Banks...

Now we have gone from 4 to 1 Banks in Storrington I guess it may be a situation that will resolve itself.

I remember from yonks ago a number of shops in Storrington called Greenfield (?), each one specialising in different products - D.I.Y./Grocery/Newsagents. Is/Was that the case or am I talking rubbish?

I'm surprised at the people who say they never use cash. Don't they ever have to pop out for a pint of milk? Don't they ever use libraries? Don't they ever give Christmas tips? Don't they use taxis? Don't they use window cleaners? Don't they ever play pool in pubs? I'd say 90% of my transactions are by card but it would be a rare month when I didn't use cash for something?

A fair few unhappy people complaining in the replies when Leicester Racecourse announced they are moving away from taking cash.

Ha, yeah bang goes money laundering for criminals and the old fella, who takes cash so the wife never finds out.

Hopefully this is a precursor to bookmakers leaving the high streets as the older generation and builders seem to be the only folk that frequent them now on a regular basis.

Cash still king here, even when I would rather a bank transfer, clients take pleasure in giving it to me expecting a builder would be grateful for it.
I have to make a special trip to the bank and lose half a day.

The most curious thing..
I'll carry a little cash just in case, but have barely used it since the first lock down.

Aldi round here is a pest as you have to put a 10p coin in their trollies to release them.

Does anyone still write cheques?

Don’t play pool in pubs these days but apart from that all of the other things I do but all through my phone by either banking transfers or contactless payments.

Really? I’m intrigued, pray, do tell.

80% is an over exaggeration, but some I've definitely been to that charge cash only, definitely something dodgy going on there. I won't name any but there's definitely some kind of money laundering / tax dodging going on at a few of them.

Carry £30 in my wallet. Seldom use it.

Except… I’ve been raiding the ATM on a daily basis for a while as my builder prefers cash. Can’t imagine why.

On the buses I regularly experience a hold-up because there is a problem with people paying by card and, in particular, telephone. I pay by cash - never once a problem.
