London day travelcards to be phased out

Used these a lot, especially for away days in London. They don't make it easy do they. It just seems to be piling more costs onto an already ridiculously expensive rail network that is generally completly unreliable and not really fit for purpose. It's interesting also that this is being done by Sadiq Khan at a time he is explanding the ULEZ. It just feels like a cash grab, use your car we'll tax you, use the train, we'll make it more expensive than it already is.

Heads they win, tails you lose.

The magic money tree has found another £1,000,000,000 for 10 miles of road.

Imagine how much they'd be spending if there wasn't a 'war on motorists'.

may be £29bn a year. thats the net contribution of motorist revenue (~40bn), less spending on roads (~11bn). no magic money tree here, all paid for.

what we really should be asking is why 10miles of road costs so much.

what's that then, that a comedian doesnt understand the principle of net zero? or that piping from North Sea to Europe is still better than shipping in from Africa, Middle East or America? or that this licences would happen even if there were no local issue over local ULEZ? it is a good example of comedians tossing aside lots of information for a bit of fun. sad because many seem to accept this without thought, as Sunak and other politicans are shite at presenting infomation or leading (Russian angle is pathetic), while we have a green lobby pushing for no energy production (no fossil fuels, climate; no solar, land use; no wind, kills birds and noise; no nuclear, we'll all die of radiation).

In 1972 proper new motorways cost £1m per mile, by 2011 £30m, in 2023 a trunk road/intersection at £95m a mile.

A similar story with rail infrastructure in the UK.

Way, way above any other type of inflation. This country has no real control on such costs.

Well we'll have an interesting experiment taking place on Saturday in Brighton. Busiest event of the year, and nobody's coming into town by train, even if they want to. Car will be king, just for one day. Let's see how that pans out

i know. i'm getting rather triggered by people saying "the science says..." then demonstrating they haven't actually read what the science, IPCC, other groups have said.
No worries.

Me? I just like a ranter. Personally I am in favour of digging up all the oils. Provided it is British diggers and British profit.

Slight problem, the other interesting experiment taking place is a City Center Pedestrianisation with no cars allowed 😉 A large number of roads closed as well

Make Greater London air cleaner, target the motorist.
Meanwhile, underground, the tens of thousands who use the Tube every day are getting poisoned by the noxious fumes. Still, at least they can reel into the fresh air, gasping for breath and praise Sadiq Khan for all his sterling work in cleaning up pollution.
