it might piss RDZ off, but if we can't get the deal done at our valuation we won't do the deal.

Although we are all concerned with RDZ's happiness with the club's recruitment, surely he acknowledges that the system works and he should trust the process?
This has got to be it.

Once the world sees they can rinse TB because he has a few quid in the bank, every subsequent transfer becomes harder.

If it is to be no deal, then so be it. We have a competitive squad

Yup.

We don’t need a genuine DM against sides like Luton or even West ‘low block’ Ham but Wolves have got some top players and we weren’t able to prevent their 16 shots. With Caicedo in the team, they’d have been lucky to get half of those.

I think we could do quite a lot of business on the 1st Sept as clubs realise they are not going to get a huge amount of ‘Caicedo tax’ but our targets push through the deals.

What is clear to me is that Alzate is no defensive midfielder. We already have 3/4 players who can do the job he does equally well (or maybe a little better).

The Newcastle game is the big one for me. Groß & Gilmour vs Guimarães & Tonali looks very tough for us indeed.
I don't agree.

Newcastle might win the game, but I don't see us getting smashed in the midfield battle. Their two aren't fantastic tacklers either

We don’t have a competitive squad for the rigours of European football. RDZ said so and we saw it for ourselves towards the end of last season and the impact two games a week has.

We have lost Undav, Caicedo Mac Allister Sanchez, Colwill and brought in Dahoud, Pedro, Milner, Igor and Verbruggen So from a numbers perspective we haven’t strengthened and arguably from a quality perspective we are weaker.

We need a couple in for sure.

Absolutely guaranteed that James Milner would be a decent defensive midfielder if needed.

But he'd not be available as left back or right back if that happens... so we'd need to retarget recruitment to full back.

Lots of possibilities.

An exciting 8 days.

I just don't agree with this. Alzate is totally up to standard. I accept there's an argument that he's not a specialist defensive midfielder which is what we need.

Remember, the fellas we were looking at signing were 19 and 20. They likely weren't going to come in and improve us straight away. Alzate is 24, he will be ready when called upon.
Since his debut he hasn't been able to hold down a position and has been shipped out on loan to get game time and only a few days ago looked likely to be sold. I think the coaching staff feel he is some way off the standard we are seeking.

no but they are much quicker and stronger
If i had the chance to swap our CM boys for theirs, I'd say no. Guimares will play a nice pass, but isn't a hard worker. Tonali played well in their first game. Remember though Shearer though is going to milk everything good the do for MOTD. Our boys won't get anything like the sweeping adulation

It will be a competitive game for sure, there will be very little between the sides. I fancy us to edge them over the course of the season.

I’m not sure why people are so desperate for us to sign someone today, or even tomorrow… as others have said it’s unlikely in the extreme that ‘player A’ walks straight into the team, far from it… yes I agree a specialist DM would be nice, but only at the right price. Sadly we are under greater scrutiny from selling clubs due to our recent transfer income, and doubtless inflation and ransom notes are being employed as tactics within the ‘art’ of negotiation… however if we refuse to pay over the odds we restrict inflating our own target market… we just can’t or shouldn’t shoot ourselves in the foot here, it would be an incredibly stupid thing to do and we all know that Tony et al are far from fools.

Make do and mend and pay the right price at the right time.

Suprised at the bed wetting on here. The club know what they are doing. We can see we have a few targets in the mix but we’re not going to let ourselves get rinsed by anyone. Keep the faith.
It is funny. We're top of the league, you'd think we'd just enjoy it! :lolol: I think we're approaching the 'history lesson' stage!

Another response from Naylor...

I think we are all aware that if the Diaz or Baleba deals were to progress, neither would walk straight into the first team.
The type of player that we lack is the physical, combative defensive midfielder that we now don’t have in our squad as an option for the games where we would need that defensive cover.
Our relatively straight forward start to the season hasn’t shown up that gap, yet.
No one is bed wetting, it’s just a case of thinking that we should get this addition into the first team squad, and a failure to do this would be a disappointment.
Yes, we have 7 days left, and we don’t want to overpay. However, the messaging around retaining Alzate as a back up has understandably caused a few concerns. Alzate is a decent midfielder but in my view is not the type of player than Roberto has described by his need for ‘different characteristics’ .

I like the style of this rumour. No noddy photoshopped picture of the lad wearing our shirt, no YouTube video with shit music or amateur voice over, no barely understandable text translation and no twat called Fab. The slightly wonky and grainy photo with the "I dont know who this guy is" vibe is just perfect.

10/10

Plus Newcastle are very light on squad players.
They are going to find it hard going once they start their European games.
At least we have a decent 22 man squad, they have nowhere near that in their team.
