Carlisle take the cheap option

Mate of mine is an Oldham fan and is on his way to Bournemouth. Just txt me to say he's just passed the Carlisle team coach, and reckons they must have set off about 6am this morning.

Hopefully the journey down tires them out abit :D

Brighton is the end of the road for Carlisle’s loyal supporters

What will you be doing today? Christmas shopping? Watching Strictly Come Dancing? Not if you are a die-hard Carlisle United supporter. If you are blue through and through, you will be getting up at the crack of dawn and spending 17 hours on a coach so that you can watch your team play away to Brighton & Hove Albion.

“I wouldn’t say our fans are crackers,” John Ward, the Carlisle manager, said. “They are just very keen.” In 17 hours you can make it to Australia by plane or fly to New York – and back – but for Carlisle fans, Brighton is the Mount Everest of away trips. It is 728 miles from Brunton Park to the Withdean Stadium and back again. Most committed supporters in the land? No contest.

“We’re definitely the best fans,” Kate Rowley, a retired police officer who has supported Carlisle for more than 50 years, said. “Come hell or high water, we’ll go anywhere to support the team.”

Living in Cumbria has its benefits, but long-distance travel is an occupational hazard if you support Carlisle. There is the peace and quiet and the fresh air, but if you are a football fan it also means endless hours spent on motorways and in traffic jams.

Some trips are so long that fans of the Coca-Cola League One club turn them into mini-holidays. Carlisle to Southend United is a 680-mile round trip, but it is always nice to be beside the seaside.

“We’re looking forward to Leyton Orient away at Easter,” Rowley said. “We’ll get there nice and early on Friday so that we can catch a West End show. We’ll watch the game on Saturday, then go to Walthamstow dogs and on Sunday we’ll go on a Thames cruise before getting back on the bus home. It’s good value for money for just £150.”

Rowley remembers the days when the terraces were packed with men in cloth caps and trilby hats and her devotion to her team has brought her joy and pain in equal measure – and an encyclopaedic knowledge of English motorways.

“We’ll be setting off for Brighton at 6am and we should be back at about one o’clock on Sunday morning,” she said. “It’s about 700 miles but I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I love the craic on the coach. We talk about everything and I’ve made some great friends. Some people even have a favourite seat that they always sit in. Once a fan, always a fan.”

Luckily for Rowley and the other Carlisle supporters, their team are top of League One and on course for promotion to the Championship, where they could be looking forward to 778 miles on the road for Plymouth Argyle away.

“We’ll have between 500 and 1,000 supporters at Brighton and it will make a big difference to the team,” Ward, who became the club’s third manager of the season in October, said. “People think that Carlisle is in another country. Don’t worry though, we’ve got electricity and lights and television like everybody else. Forget the myths. It doesn’t get dark here at two in the afternoon and we can’t see the Northern Lights.”

Win this afternoon and Ward’s team can move three points clear at the top. Exactly where the manager wants his team to be to before the big local derby in April. Carlisle United v Leeds United.

Elland Road will be packed - and it is only 2½ hours away.

In for the long haul

What about the Albion fans who made make the trip to Carlisle, for a start? Their effort is obviously equal to that of those from Carlisle making the trip down here.

Mate of mine was on the flight down with them last night. Sat next to one of the players who reckoned today would be a diff game for them and that Leeds would win the league.

diddnt we take about 1000 to carlisle a few season back ? it was a 0-0 draw if i remember correctly?

just under 1000 i think it was - and that was one of the first games after we gained promotion and were chasing the title

fair play to the Carlisle fans do those sort of distance every other week, though its not much different to us really having to go oop north. Liked the bit about Leeds being the local derby

in all fairness, they have to do a LOT more travelling than we do

we only have to go PROPER north for them, hartlepool, leeds and huddersfield. and their 'local' derby would be northampton for us

last year we left at 4am on friday morning, in manchester by 8.30am, had a few hours sleep in our travelodge, night out, then drove the rest of the way on the saturday

it was a fantastic weekend, only ruined by the sheer incompotence of our display that day
