So who's planning to go to Cardiff then ? Lets have a big turn out and show the poor misguided folk of Cardiff fools what a well supported team looks like.

We already know what a well-supported team looks like. We went to Leeds a couple of weeks ago.

"Poor misguided folk of Cardiff fools....."

Hmmmmm.

Near the park.
I'm bloody going, even though the whole of south wales will be able to smell my fear.....

And.... I'm taking my kazoo.

I may not exactly be saying anything new, but, I really really dig the ALBION, it's about tradition and roots and honour. I honestly think our away turnout is the wittiest and coolest bunch to travel the country.

We punch well above our weight.

Come to Cardiff like you came to Leeds, Millwall, Tottenham, West Ham etc etc.

The difference between Cardiff and the other clubs listed is, they have a reputation, but generally we have never had any major hassle there. However the last visit to Cardiff was evil.

Having said that I am going back to Ninian again and will see if it has all calmed down like TLB claims.

"Misguided" in the sense that you expect a small away turn because of your reputation.

"Fools" in the sense that`my sentence structure is appalling.

Plenty of clubs have brought decent away followings here over the last couple of years. I don't have the figures handy now, but I'll post them up for you sometime over the next couple of days.

anyone got an accurate account of what happened last time we visited Ninian Park????

Yep it was evil.

A couple of people got a slap before hand, but the main issue was after the game, the police had to clear the Cardiff fans to get the majority of Albion fans out of the ground. To be honest a lot of the issues were caused by poor policing as well as the fact that a number of the locals wanted to kill us. Lets say it was a fast paced walk back to Cardiff station after that one.

What I will say is we got away unscarred and were in a pub in Bath by 1830. However that was because we left on the final whistle and essentially got out of the terrace before the majority of their fans got out. Those that were not so quick, did get stuck in the ground, whilst the police cleared the committee outside.

My main gripe with the day was the copper telling us that as we had got the train, we were on our own and they would only escort those that were using road transport back to their vehicles.

However Cardiff itself is a cracking drink.

Last time I went to Nininan Park, after 90 minutes laughing at a a bunch of primary school children giving it the old wrist action and running their fingers across their throats and climbing up the fences (like they do on the apparatus in a playground), we were kept in after the came. This is not unusual, happens at loads of grounds.

Where the Cradiff expericence differs is that this detention is usually accomapied by howls of protest from people eager to go home. There was a complete absence of that at Ninian Park and when the doors finally opened half an hour later no one wanted to leave. It was obvious to us that several packs of local morons were waiting to...well we assumed it wasn't to wish us a safe jouney back to Sussex, but the local Hedlu were seemingly oblivious to them.

This stand -off last about an hour, so an hour after the game I finally consider the risks involved in leaving the ground and walking the quater of a mile to my car just about worth taking.

Ridiculous in this day and age.

To make the day worse, I got a parking ticket for my troubles.

To be fair, their supporters have done their job - created an intimidating atmosphere for visitng supporters, and make people think twice about coming back to support their team. Well done boys. I for one will not be making the journey to Cardiff this time, or at any time in the forseeable future. Life is too short. Hope that helps BTID.

Hutchings: I'm not taking the piss, and I appreciate that some Albion fans did have a rough ride here back in 2001, but it would appear from your story that you didn't actually encounter any trouble at all yourself, other than the inconvenience of being kept behind after the game. If that's the case, then why are you so set against the idea of ever coming back to Cardiff?

Cardiff away last time was the most unpleasant, nauseating experience I have had at football for years. It was like a bloody timewarp. And the attitude of the South Wales Police and Hammam's prancing about in our section was beyond belief.

When I go on tour I have to miss matches occasionally - I can't cram everything into the close season - and I pick 'em carefully. I'll be touring Germany next week. And although I will miss seeing the Albion very much, I won't miss Ninian Park one tiny bit.

I’m sure many of you will remember Denis Healey ‘s famous quote that being attacked by Geoffrey Howe was ‘like being savaged by a dead sheep’. Well......

SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES
(Cardiff, 29/9/2001)

Five hundred faces filled with hate.
A torrent of abuse.
‘You’ll get a kicking after, mate!’
And sure, all hell broke loose.
I thought of Healey’s epithet -
but here, no Geoffrey Howe.
Alive, these ovine predators.
And desperate for a row!

I heard the sound of distant drums.
The drums of Cozy Powell.
I heard old Noddy’s rasping yell
and Bolan’s neighing howl.
I thought of tank tops, awful flares:
‘You’ll never make the station!’
Not Ninian Park - Jurassic Park.
Time for modernisation!
