I had a local retailer try it on recently when I was paying a large sum. I gave them several opportunities to change their mind and kept advising them it was actually illegal. They stood their ground up to the point of me presenting my card for the payment, when nothing was said but they didn’t apply the charge they’d said was required. I guess they were just trying to get me to change the payment method, but were well aware if they applied the charge I was likely to report them.

Not credit card related, but Seagull Travel charge an 'Online Booking Fee' per transaction.

Not so long ago it was £1.50 per transaction. This season it is £2 and we've been told that next season it will be £3.

I but a season ticket for home travel on ST - so that attracts just the one charge. But for away games it's often only possible to book one game at a time because it's linked to away match tickets going on sale. Travel to London games are around £32 - so the booking fee equates to almost 10%.

I asked a couple of seasons ago what the fee actually covered, but just got a vague response saying it was to cover costs. I'd be surprised if they were charged as much for each online transaction

I would not at all be surprised - taking payments and distributing funds is an expensive business, mainly because of fraud etc and also because banks like making profits on everything they do.

Quite, companies can get away with it by charging an online transaction fee, disguised as a booking fee so why shouldn't retailers, problem is they are easy prey especially as the government don't care about the amount we are robbed by people like ticketmaster

I bought a ticket for Weller at the Brighton Centre a couple of weeks ago. Clicked on the link from Brighton Centre website which of course took me to Ticketmaster. Looked at all the fees involved and thought sod that. A return on the 700 bus was less than half the fees Ticketmaster were going to charge.

I have no issue with small retailers charging people to pay by credit card for transactions of under say £10, limited to their cost to process the transaction by the river bank
Nice to hear that. I have a small shop and have the most competitive card processing company. We dont have a minimum spend as we like to encourage people to come to the shop (although some take the piss when buying just a pack of Rizla with a card), you also find that it is a childs first endeavour in to independence and paying themselves by using a card however our fees are between £400 and £500 a month.

Just been booking a touring holiday to Oz, seems there it’s standard practice still. Most of the places I’ve booked with have added 1-1.5% to the bills.

No one or hardly anyone carries cash these days. I often buy things for tiny amounts on Apple Pay mostly.

often booking fees are there for the cost of running some software to manage the bookings. they could just build it into the price, i believe there's some tax implications for doing so.
