Why would the insurance not be valid? Of course it is!!

She is also accumulating her no-claims discount.

Its also actually illegal,

If in the event of a claim, you could not prove you were the main driver and not your daughter there is a good chance they would not pay out.
DO you have a car yourself , insured by yourself ? if so this is a bit of a givaway.
Also named drivers NCB are only valid when re insuring with the same insurer. Others will not accept it.
I know its the cheapest option, , but it need to be done legally as they can lose their licence.
This can happen if the insurance company decides the insurance is not valid and are prosecuted for driving without Insurance which will result in a six point penalty, 6 points in the first two years means they are banned and have to re take the test, is it worth the risk ?

have a son of 19 so know the problems.

I sympathise with 'good' young drivers wishing to accumulate their own no claims discount.

Why not simply go fire and theft only for a few years, surely that quote was for comprehensive, thus reducing the premium very substantially but also encouraging even more careful driving !

That quote would have been for 3rd party only, Full comp one one of those cars for a 17 year would 7-8k
Remember they are not insuring the car, but the driver and the risks associated with that driver.

actually the chances are a new driver wont prang their car (majority dont)

But they are far more likely to have an accident than a 50 year old who has driven blemish free for 30 years. Insurance premiums aren't based on guesswork, they're based on the probability of the insurance company paying out. If middle aged drivers were a greater risk than teenagers then they'd be paying substantially more money.

yes, more likely. maybe for example, 10% likly to have an accident rather than 2%. not the same as thing as saying "chances are they'll have an accident" like its 50+ chance. Premiums are, like most services and goods, priced to what the market will bear. a while ago now, but my first car was a classic car, premium were half of that for my mates driving fiestas, novas, golfs, polos.

be interesting to see what happend if a facebook campaign got a generation of drivers to simply not bother for a couple of years. all those premium gone, what would the insurance companies do?

Interestingly, an article appeared in today's Daily Mail online concerning an 18 year old male from Slough who has just passed his test and purchased his first car.

He brought a W reg Vauxhall Corsa with a 1 litre engine. First Central Insurance quoted him £72,000 (yes £72k) for insurance (thats almost as much per day as I pay in a year). The Daily Mail used Moneysupermarket.com to obtain some quotes. They had to make some assumptions when answering some of the questions, but the results show that the highest (the name is not disclosed) was £13732. The four lowest were Hastings Direct £4234.72, Admiral £2299.59, Bell £2287.93 and the least was Elephant at £2232.81. Slough according to the article is an insurance hotspot so the premiums quoted reflect that. They do give however a steer as to which insurance companies to look at.

phone round the classic car insurers to find one that will cover as a classic with NCB accumulation. .....and no tax if older than 1972 L reg.
Don't you also have to have a main car insured to qualify for reduced rate classic car insurance any more?

Also, all 1972 registered vehicles are tax exempt (if not used for trade). In fact many registered in 1973 will qualify, as long as they were constructed in 1972.

My daughter is learning at the moment (14 lessons ) and has just bought an 02 1.1 clio (£1800).
We insured her with the Admiral Multicar policy.
3rd party but with additional legal, injury, breakdown etc. She is covered for anything except writing it off herself.
My wifes fiesta as the additional car, but her insurance is not due for renewal until 9 months time....They just accepted a promise to use them when the time comes!
Cost for my daughter as a learner £770.00, rising to £1050.00 when she passes. Bloody brilliant if you ask me.

Third party isn't a great deal cheaper these days. I've been driving for ten years now and it made about £40 difference on £600 total insurance cost.

That is good but it'll shoot up in 2012 when they'll no longer be able to sexually discriminate.

The insurance company's now have so many processes that that are able to check every aspect of your policy in the event of a claim, even things like mileage, putting down that you only do 3000 pa when your doing 10,000, it's ok if you never have to claim but if you do they can and will check because they look at every conceivable angle to get out of paying out.

On another note, the autoglass ad that claims if you have fully comp insurance you claim against a new windscreen it don't effect you no claims bonus, well they are technically telling the truth but it does effect how much you will pay when you renew your insurance as you have to declare that you have a made a Windscreen/glass claim and when i renewed the difference between between telling them and not was £90 and that needs to be declared for the next 5 years and not telling them is not an option as in the event of a claim they would find out and would not pay out.

I looked at getting my girlfriend insurance through Admiral Multicar - since I'm already insured with them. For me to be insured on my car, and her to be insured on her's with me as a named driver (i'm not letting her touch my 60 reg fiesta) it was only about £800 more than I already pay for my car alone. This was with her holding a provisional licence, on a Ford Ka.
