Car insurance

I wouldn't unless you have a really cheap car that you arn't worried about recovering any money for if in an accident, even if it was not your fault.

With Third party policies, you need the legal cover, which any claim would go through, but they are not insurers, and it is very diificult to get claims settled.

I was with Elephant, third party, fire and theft, and found them to be dreadful when it comes to dealing with claims. The may be cheap, but they have been completely useless - and i am currently escalating a complaint to the FSA about how long it has taken, and their inaction for long periods of time to actually resolve my claim

I have an ongoing claim from mid November '07 that was on a third party policy, my car was parked up legally for the night when hit by another car, the driver who abandoned their car and fled, but the police caught up with them.

They were insured and therefore their insurance company would have to settle my claim. It is still unresolved to this date despite being told in July by the other drivers insurance party that they would issue the cheque, (and collect my car, which was a write-off, which they did in July) yet still no cheque and they are trying to now get out of paying out on it any way they can - something my insurance company seems happy to accept rather than fight for what i am rightly entitled to.

I've always found that starting civil proceedings against the other driver tends to expedite this type of situation. You won't catch me waiting on an insurance settlement for 10 months - a fortnight maybe and then it's a pay up within fourteen days or I sue letter to the insured, NOT the insurers.

Swiftsure.com have been the cheapest by a long way on two car insurances that my daughter and her boyfriend have taken out over the last year...and I do mean by a long way. Worth checking out if you haven't already bought insurance.

Thats exactly the point though, a car worth 1500 quid is not worth claiming for if you're a male under 21!

I think you'll find that the reason you're having problems is cos Elephant are pretty shit, not because of the type of cover you had? And did you have legal expenses cover, I can't work it out from what you said?

The annoying thing is that since I have read this thread, I have not been able to get the Shela's Wheels song out of my head!

Fellas, wouldn't you love to be a woman,
Would you often love to high heels,
for if you had a name like Florence,
and you needed Car isurance,
you'd get a bonza deal with Shela's wheels...

On a more constructive note - I went with zurich when I was 17 (6 years ago now!), they were quite good. I went with 3rd party fire and theft - I couldn't afford any more. It is well worth paying for the legal cover bit though (if it is an optional extra).

If your in employment, have a play around with what you put as your occupation

i.e Chef will have a higher premium than a cook etc....

Secondly, don't buy the insurance on the tin tin net...ring up after you have the internet quote & ask them to quote you again....(this does work!!)

Quinn Direct are the cheapest here for young drivers so I can't see why they wouldn't be up there in the UK - its a Northern Irish company. Very good at settling stuff quickly too - I got hit, other drivers fault - car was back to me repaired in ten days without the other drivers insurance even taking a look at it due to the claim handler in Quinn being quite forceful.

Get your Dad to insure the car with you as a named driver but make sure it's a company that allows named drivers to build up a no claims bonus. I know Directline do this but there are others out there!!

And if you try to make a claim you've got HELL to go through. This is known as 'fronting' and is illegal. Would NOT recommend doing it especially if you're going to do any serious mileage - named drivers are meant solely to be secondary/tertiary/further drivers of the car.

Not so as long as you state the named driver will be the main driver of the car.

That ensures you get no discount at all though! They aren't going to reduce the premium when its clear the main driver is a far higher risk category then the apparen "first driver" you've just confirmed isn't the first driver.

That's crap as it works better for my wife to be on my policy as named but main driver. Saved us a few hundred quid.

I don't believe you - and not for the first time on here.

If you tell an insurance firm someone is going to be the most frequent driver, they will be listed as the main driver (albeit possibly not the policy holder).

You can believe what you like. Just telling it like it is.

And the policy is partially priced by the main driver AND the policyholder.

But you already have several years NCD no doubt? If you took out a new policy without using and NCD in your name with her on it but listed her as the main driver it should be the same price, or sometimes more, as her her doing it on her own

Possibly would be as much as i have full NCD? But i am sure that John Boy has a parent with a few years NCD on their policy?
