[Misc] Car Insurance cost

I thought higher mileage, within reason, lowered premiums.

I've no garage or drive, car abandoned in the road- so that impacts too. Always been the same though
I never quite understand what dictates what, like many industries they just take the piss until they get reeled in.

see energy/fuel providers, and pet supplies ( another one I've noticed recently)

Whilst it did sound good there's no cost reduction. Clearly this is where the market is now. I've had the same with my company's PI, thought after 8 years of no claims it would be really low but no.
As I said, the new quote I got from GoCompare was actually lower than what I’d spent the previous year ie the one from Churchill that went up 40%. Reading the later posts has reminded me it was also with OneCall. How good they’ll be if I need to make claim remains to be seen — but they were cheap for my needs.

These premiums all sound cheap to me. The premiums in Canada are wild. I bought my first car here about 18 months ago and my first year's insurance was CA$310 (about £190) per MONTH on a low mileage without using it to commute. When I renewed it I managed to find a provider who takes my UK driving history into account, but it's still costing me CA$180 (£110) per month. This is for a 39 year-old with no points and no previous claims doing up to 7000km non-commuting in a bog standard VW Golf.
My fully comp insurance is about £240 a year and that’s without any no claims bonus (I officially moved back to the UK only last year after a long time abroad). My car is 15 y-o and I’m more than four times 15 y-o which might help explain it.

I work for one of the uk's biggest providers and our prices have gone up on average 30% over the last 12 months. If you've made any fault claims or picked up points the increases can be eye watering.

A few tips:

If you have multiple cars registered at your home address, regardless of who insures them make sure they are listed on the policy under "number of cars in the household" this will lower your premium as underwriters use the information for theft risk.

Make a judgement on whether it's actually worth protecting your NCD. If you have the maximum points the increase post claim might not be as profound as you think, most of your increase will down to your perceived risk as a result of the claim.

If you're looking to insure young/learner drivers choose the car wisely, some modest cars in low insurance groups have some staggering premiums at the moment. The most basic Kia picanto has a very low premium for young drivers.
Don't be afraid to seek separate specialist policies for young drivers while keeping yourself with regular providers

Some decent discounts are offered for multi vehicle and multi product policies.

Finally, if your on the cusp of turning 80 choose wisely, lots of providers have stopped offering new quotes and more will surely follow

Our car is 11 years old, renewed with LV on 1st March, protected NCD, and it hardly went up at all. I won’t hesitate to shop around next February if I have to.

It's insane. I've looked around and can't see anything worth changing for, which means there's little I can do to reduce the price. I may try lying to see what they can do I guess, pretend I've found a lower quote somewhere
Try the hello can you reduce my premium please
oh there s always something you can do for loyal customers approach 😉 Not guaranteed but worth a shot

Tesco have good reviews from Which so I’m sure your be fine .
Make sure you check the details with them though. They claimed I gave the wrong driving test pass date for mybgaughter after I had accepted a quote ( I did not) and then gave me an option to pay an extra 250 or have the insurance cancelled within a week. Make sure you screenshot the details you send them.

I tried but the policy is online only, when I keyed the initial digits in the automated call system it states online only. Online states no better offer. All tied up in a neat bow!

Plus comparison sites have similar policy costs.

Tossers. I'll swallow it, no choice if I want the car. Some poor sods with mortgage increases, food cost increases, child care increases and a real need to keep running a car are going to really suffer.

Tip for youngsters - my nephew got a quote of close to £2k to insure a car in Preston. When he had his parents, living on Anglesey, as named drivers (but keeping himself as main driver) the quote halved.

Vitality leaving the personal lines car insurance market.

https://www.insurancetimes.co.uk/ne...ll-leave-car-insurance-market/1445620.article

The article reinforces some of the reasons on this thread as to cost increases. Unfortunately, this is not good news for consumers. Although much better known for innovative life and health, and therefore not missed on it's own, the fewer providers there are, the less reason to cut rates when things get better to get business back. It also robs Vitality of the chance to offer multi product discounts, something other providers are considering.

Not just cars. Every one of my insurance policies has gone up by far more than the rate of inflation this year.

Mine was up for renewal in March usual increase, as they always do, although a lot larger than normal. Polite call asking what the best price for renewal before I shopped around, (I used to get all the Comparison quotes but can’t be arsed these days, and I don’t think it makes a blind bit of difference IMO, they seem to have a bottom line they will go to), emphasise what a loyal customer I am, blah, blah.. Get my discount and off the phone in a few minutes.
They know the score it’s all a dance as is Sky etc.

My quote is up 60% !!!
Winner! Well done, congraturaltions and all that! Shelling out hundreds of additional £'s is a small price to pay for such an accolade

I wonder if that further hike is related to the EV fire at Luton airport;)
