I have been in the AA since 1986 and have had great service from them . Two years ago I was paying £110 .Last year it went up to £150 which shocked me but this year it went to £190 . I phoned them up and they offered to drop to £150 but Ihave decided to go to my bank which is offering breakdown and travel insurance for £12.50 a month. If you are with they AA I would suggest to keep an eye on the quickly rising membership charges. . What are you NSC guys paying? I did have home start and some relay recovery included.

Personal membership with Green flag, covers me and the wife in any car for a little over £90 for the year, bargain I think. And that’s the full package excluding foreign travel.

I had similar a while back with the AA but that was because they had tried to upgrade me to their next membership level. I pay through my car insurance now as it was only a couple of pounds extra.

I must admit that I was initially going to respond about how you are still paying the same cost just monthly until I realised you have travel insurance included as well!

Is there an age limit on the car covered? My car is now 13 years old and I think the cut off on my policy is 16 years, so I'm getting close.

Yeah, I've got the Travel Package with my bank (Barclays|). Costs about £150 a year, and that also includes travel insurance.

I've used both the breakdown service (thankfully it's an RAC man rather than a bank clerk who turns up) and claimed on the travel insurance . No complaints about either. I was especially impressed with the travel insurance where they paid up without quibbling.

Mine is free with my insurance but €15 a year for the 125 cc scooters :)

I was with Greenflag until they upped my premium massively because I had one home-start during my 24+ months with them.. and they wouldn't come down to a reasonable offer so I cancelled them.

I now get breakdown cover through my Nationwide Flex Account +, and I've used it several times. They've always been brilliant and haven't kept me waiting long or changed me any additional fees. Very impressed. Worth the £12pm account fee, also bundled other insurances and decent % of interest on whatevers in my current account every month.

Don't be put off by their crap adverts :lolol:

I've been with the AA for 26years. This year they wanted £276.44.
This is for joint cover/relay/home start and roadside. I phoned them up and had a rant!
Took myself off the cover due to my illness. £106.00! Saved£170.00.
Up until this last year I used to pay everyone what they asked for. I have saved hundreds of pounds by 'renegotiating':)

I'm amazed there are still people who don't shop around for stuff like this each year. It's a small effort, but pays off in cash.

I've never paid more than about £70/80 for full-fat breakdown cover.

A further two words: Quidco; Topcashback

Just called out Green Flag. Part of my bank account package. Timed arrival. Arrived on time. App available to monitor arrival. Diagnosed, recognised and fixed problem. Reset diagnostics. £10 for a drink. Done and dusted.

Me too - Same with car insurance. I have a mate who has been insuring the same car (boring VW Passat) with the same company for about 15 years now. Never had an accident - his annual premium is over £800, which he just pays because he can't be bothered to shop around.

I used to have a good breakdown cover with my Toyota garage but when my Yaris died I bought a Hyundai and got RAC cover. This cost £101.00 for the first year, my renewal is due and it is now £135 for the year ! peed off about a 30% increase and I never even called them out last year !

Do the RAC still salute when they see a member with a metal badge bolted to the front radiator grill.
Only it's been a while since I have had breakdown cover.

It's enough to give you a breakdown.

We have the same with Barclays. Breakdown cover in Europe (we had to use it four years ago and were excellent) RAC cover in Britain, and travel insurance including our various ailments. We pay £12.50 a month.

Sounds like you need a new car if you have used them that much!

Been with the AA for decades. Yes I do have to barter on renewal. I think I am paying £120 at the moment. Home start, onward travel to include car hire if car is un repairable on the spot, National recovery (car goes back home from anywhere in the UK or whatever garage I want it to) roadside assistance and any car I am in that breaks down is covered, even if it’s not mine.

Unlimited call outs too. I had an electrical drain a couple of years ago that didn’t go away with a new battery. They came out 3 or 4 times and eventually trailered the car to a specialist 20 miles from my home when it wouldn’t start...again!

Can I get all that cheaper somewhere and be sure I’m going to get good service, which is more important than the cost to me.
