yes but defoe was much better than ashton in the league this season, which is what cappello is looking at

remember we have quite a while until our next competitive game so its not really a big deal

That's what I'm hoping.

Rather than the usual, flattering, flash in the pan start to an England manager's career, I can honestly say that I don't mind if Capello plays around with stuff, I don't mind if he loses a bunch of matches, and I don't mind if he gives us s succession of dull, experimental games. God knows we've got used to the crap performances by now.

If he's given the chance to do that, then hopefully the England side will end up with some strong foundations at last, as opposed to the typical scenario of losing one player through injury and the whole squad falling apart.

I think the reality check of failing to qualify for Euro 2008 has actually caused a lot of fans to think the same way, and to recognise that a slow, patient building process is the way forward.

PS I did chuckle at Mark Lawrenson's cynicism tonight, when Gerrard started limping after a tackle.

"That looks like a case of Trinidad & Tobago Knee" pipes up Lawro.

to be honest i'm not sure whether the team that starts the first qualifier will differ much from that team today, the exceptions being defoe who i think will be replaced by owen and lampard who will be replaced by joe cole (gerrard in the centre)

young will most likely be given playing time against t&t as i'd be suprised if all/any of the chelsea and man u players play

young isn't as good as joe cole, gerrard, lampard, hargreaves, barry or beckham though so i doubt he'll start in competitive games

Bit early to be calling for the managers head!!

Typical post season internation friendly. You can read too much into these games and we have never really looked a side that interested when we play them.

I expect to see a squad of fringe players on saturday but boring as tonights game was we moved the ball well and never really looked under threat.

Will reserve judgement until the WC qualifiers have finished
