The USA would do the whole world a favour by introducing a federal law abolishing capital punishment.

I completely agree.

But the death sentence does not always mean the death sentence, or at least not straight away.

This site has some interesting figures https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/death-row/death-row-time-on-death-row

In 2018 the average time between sentencing and execution was 243 months (20 years), obviously some are executed after only a short time. And over half of the prisoners on death row have been there for over 18 years. Also some are eventually exonerated and others are given a prison sentence instead of execution.

As the conclusion says the time spent on death row has got increasingly longer in recent years

Incarceration for life or 40 years is more of punishment.

For that reason alone, I’m fine with no death penalty.

But I’ll add that I’m pleased Nazi/Japanese war criminals were executed. The industrialised torture, rape, experimenting on, murder of innocent people, deserved the rope. Some of these mass murderers got prison instead and were leading normal lives in West Germany by the 60’s and 70’s - disgusting. Israel did the right thing by Eichmann.

the kick about figure to keep a john in jail for a year was 18 k in 1992 , apparently now , in Aus it costs 160 k to keep a jon in jail , so by your reckoning , factoring in inflation and governmental manipulation lets say 250 k per yer on average per inmate over a 15 year stretch ,again average ....that is 3.25 million of your currency per inmate , so if you have 150 k inmates that is half a billion of you currency ...i have no idea how many inmates there are in England now ....i could find out but as usual i cant be bothered ...all i can say is don't go there , it's shyte....!! and it's a massive rort.

Hence one of the reasons why I want to make this programme, to get both sides of the argument.

What do you feel you will gain from these two guests though? What will they provide which most people don’t know already? This discussion has, excuse the pun, been done to death over the years/decades and has become quite hackneyed. Why not debate something more relevant and topical like cancel culture?

Perhaps the answer is to say that the International Criminal Court has the option to impose the death penalty (rather than on a state level)? The Nuremburg trials were the forerunners of that, and I doubt anyone would have shed a tear for the likes of Slobodan Milošević. On the Putin point raised by others above, realistically if he were to stand trial for his crimes (massive, massive "if" that) it would be in The Hague, not Moscow (or Kyiv). The individuals who end up there tend to be accused of crimes against humanity rather than specific crimes.

So you're saying that the state doesn't have the right to take a person's life away directly but it's okay for the state give a woman the right to take her unborn child's life away?

I'm not saying that I don't agree, but I question your logic.

valid point.

no doubt there are a few million we could easily do without at the more advanced end of the chronological scale....no doubt at all.

On many issues, I'm liberal. But when it comes to keeping people convicted of terrorism offences safe and well in prison, I'm very much in favour of capital punishment. In very extreme and rare cases, I think it's justified to terminate a life for the greater good but with a burden of proof which is absolutely unquestionable and unimpeachable. I'm not advocating frequent or regular executions, but if you commit an act of terrorism, like the Manchester bombing, you should be ended. As a punishment, and a future deterrent.

It is shameful so many Nazi war criminals avoided prosecution. British historian Mary Fulbrook wrote in her recent book “Reckonings: Legacies of Nazi Persecution and the Quest for Justice”

“Of those perpetrators actually brought to court in the Federal Republic of Germany before the end of the twentieth century, only 164 individuals were eventually sentenced as perpetrators of murder, rather than for lesser crimes,” she writes. “In view of the hundreds of thousands of individuals who had been involved in the machinery of mass murder and the six million people who had died in what we now call the Holocaust, 164 convictions for murder is not an impressive total.”

A fair point. If it’s about removing threats from society then there’s a very very simple solution to this which doesn’t involve execution.

Putting them in jail is little comfort to the victims.

They don't get told when their attackers will be released so they live in constant fear they could be out there again some day.

They can't trust or rely on the courts to protect them.

Again. A simple tweak to the current laws could remedy this. It’s an easier tweak than reintroducing the death penalty.

For the reasons I gave in an earlier post I’m out of this thread.

Looking forward to more and more topical & relevant debates like this such as: "Should we let women and catholics have the vote?", "Decimalisation: Yes or No?" and "Is Wayne Rooney 'world class'"?

Who the **** is commissioning Latest TV these days :lolol::moo:

Also Harty, you've got three options there, so you should really have 3 guests on. if you're intending to be truly impartial.

How can you possibly walk away from a meeting of minds such as this. Just think of your own edification, HT.

I've forgotten the question now....I am very strongly opposed to murder and find the idea of allowing the state to do it quite disgusting, if that helps

I don't like all this moral inexactitude. If you favour capital punishment why not use it instead of prison? The nation would be a better place if we execute shop lifters, drink drivers and the like, surely? And it would save a fortune. We could even harvest organs for transplantation.

Jonathan Swift was a pussy.

It’s all pointless. We will never again have the death sentence in the U.K.
The OP should debate something that hasn’t been pointlessly done to the point of irrelevance?
