I thought England were pretty good under Venables

In a load of meaningless games. Venables was in the fortunate position of not having to qualify. In the 5 competative games under TV:

Switzerland - a dull, uninspiring 1-1 draw
Scotland - a truley crap performance rescued by a penalty save and a wonder goal
Holland - superb performance no question, but against the flakey Dutch who were in full-on "argument" mode again at the time
Spain - played us off the park, hugely fortunate to progress past them
Germany - good performance, a real ding-dong battle but the usual heroic exit

I don't think Venables' England was all that, at all.

If he doesn't like seeing foreign players in the Premiership perhaps he should come down to the Withdean and see some World Class English players. Considering pretty much our entire starting line up is English he gets more value for his money by watching us :D
You heard it here first, Mayo to replace Ashley Cole at left back. I have it on good authority too so it MUST be true!!!

I can understand that you could look at the figures and say 'only 35% are English I have less to choose from' but lets be honest, Lippis doesn't look at all 73% of the Italian players does he.

I look at it that if the standard of the league is higher the players have to be better to play so those 35% should be very good.

I don't think he is trying to use it as an excuse ... excuse for what so far, anyway?

He's making a point, and a damn good one, that unless we find a way of getting more English players in the Premier League we'll never have a world-beating England team.

We could use this argument for Bobby Robson quite easily.

He got us to the semi finals of the world cup in 90 but we only scraped past Egypt, Belgium & Cameroon. We could only draw against Ireland and Holland before being beaten heroically by the Germans. Not exactly world beating when you also throw in 0 points in 3 games in Euro 88.

Point I'm making is that we must give Robson & Venables some credit - They have done more than any other managers of England in getting to a semi final of a major competition even if they did enjoy luck and some dodgy games along the way. Steve Mclaren on the other hand......

Robson takes more cudos than Venables though surely, courtesy of the fact that we reached a Quarter Final and a Semi Final in World Cups on foreign soil.

Wembley was always something of a fortress, so having the only competative games of your tenure there was something of a luxury. Robson had far more difficult a task with England than Venables ever had to contend with.

Robson was only beaten by the hand of God in Mexico so surely that counts more than a penalty shootout?
