Haven’t read everything on this thread but remember that Sanchez is still a young man. Like Caicedo he is probably easily led/ ill advised by much older or more experienced agents and the like. Why is everyone so happy to cut Caicedo slack (rightly IMHO) after his antics in the January window yet write Sanchez off so quickly? In football things can change so easily, remember that should big Bob stroll out as our #1 at the start of next season

Probably because Caicedo didn't look to step away from playing football.

But, yes, your point is absolutely correct. Robert Sanchez enjoyed quite a meteoric rise from non-matchday-featuring number three to Premier League starter, received lots of plaudits and was called up by his country, which just happens to be one that's very good at football.

Behind him he had the "perfect number two" - someone was was a good day-to-day trainer, had no pretensions to be the number one and was happy with Cup matches.

Then, to the surprise of pretty much everyone, that number two was made number one and Sanchez, the rising star, was relegated to goalkeeping cheerleader and cup goalie.

Of course he's pissed off - he didn't see any of this coming and he wants to be playing first-team football every week.

Who said I know better? I certainly didn’t. We all have preferences for the characteristics we like in players. The goalkeeping position is no different. RDZ puts more stock in being good with your feet than actual goalkeeping attributes. I don’t feel the same.

How do you know there aren’t other factors going on behind the scenes. How do you know RDZ hasn’t been a royal twunt to him?

I’m not saying either of these questions are valid excuses, just that we’ve only heard one side of the story and our fans have jumped on the guy in quite an embarrassing way, considering many of the performances he’s put in for us.

No, no l'm sure he doesn't think that at all. There is no doubt though that at the top end of the football pyramid, modern coaching methods are more and more reliant on goalkeepers being more adept with their feet, and passing the ball out than ever before.

What did he do wrong last night? Made a couple of cracking saves, one of which then near enough lead to our goal - couldn't really do anything for any of the goals - but almost got enough on the third to deflect it onto the post.

Cracking saves? He made two saves that were straight at him, and one from a dive that he pushed into the centre of the box and was incredibly fortunate not to concede from.

I don’t remember him claiming any crosses, he was poor for the third and didn’t make Wilson make a decision, he was indecisive for the fourth, and the first he made zero effort to get to. It’s also telling that, even for their second our defensive line was so deep, giving Burn the run on the header because we’re now reliant on the defenders heading the ball away, rather than the keeper dealing with it as Sanchez would’ve done.

Honestly, I get that our manager wants a GK who’s good with his feet, but he has no outstanding qualities in the conventional goalkeeping attributes and that worries me every game. I appreciate most don’t agree, but I’m yet to see any really compelling evidence to change my opinion other than some good passing from Steele. But that alone just doesn’t do it for me as far as goalkeepers go.

No doubt re the second point. Sanchez originally came into the side with this being highlighted as one of the reasons why.
