You'd think the law of averages alone would lead to Sanchez saving the odd penalty now and again. Apparently not. The only way United miss a penalty today is if they miss the target. Sadly tho, they never did

I did wonder if De Zerbi might sub Sanchez for Steele on 115 minutes for pens. Clearly Steele is better at saving them. Then again it was Solly not Sanchez that fluffed their lines.

Tho I guess Solly probably never envisaged that he'd be called upon to take one when he (presumably) volunteered to be seventh in line for for penalty duties. One step too far for his new-found confidence sadly. But fair play to the lad for having the guts to step up to the plate anyway

Thought Sanchez was solid for the 120 mins. I agree with a few other posters that I couldn't see Steele making that save from the deflected shot either. This is the big difference for me in that whilst Steele hasn't let us down, Sanchez is capable of making match-winning saves, or in yesterday's case taking-the-game-to-penalties saves.

Seems quite a few are writing him off based on a few months of suspect performances, which is harsh for a 25-year-old keeper with a lot to learn. I'm assuming most of you saw the season that 27-year-old Jason Steele had in the first Sunderland 'til I Die?

I also thought Robbie played very well yesterday.

I do find it strange that he can't save a spot kick (the JWP one doesn't count in my view as if you push it straight back to the taker you may as well not have saved it). But to be fair, I'm struggling to think of a penalty that he should have saved either yesterday or in all the 20 odd he's faced.

Everybody who takes one against us just seems to completely bury them

I'm not sure that Steele would have made that save during the match, but think he is a better penalty keeper and did think he might be subbed on with 2 minutes to go, but I don't think any Keeper would have saved any of Utd's penalties, so

Now let's go and smash Forest, regardless of which of our excellent Keepers RDZ gives the gloves to.

This. The only thing that edges it for Steele is that his distribution is an absolute mile better than Sanchez. That’s more important than the old world class save the way we play. If we weren’t so keen on drawing sides onto us and the keeper being an integral part to that Sanchez would be playing.

I thought he had a good game. I thought he did well against Chelsea too. He's an excellent keeper who is decent with the ball at his feet, just not as good as Steele.

It makes me sad to think we could lose such a good keeper because he's merely decent rather than excellent with the ball at his feet.

I'd be happy either way with whoever takes the gloves going forward. I guess it's Steele, but i think they've both pushing each other hard which is how it should be.

Totally agree with this. Sanchez was fine with the ball yesterday and couldn’t do anything about the pens. I’m not sure any keeper could have. But he kept us in it with saves and claims that I’ve no faith Steele would’ve got close to.

They’re different keepers ultimately, with different strengths. If RDZ wants Steele, then fine. But for me, I’d have Sanchez every day of every week. He’s a much more rounded keeper, with the major weakness being the odd error, but given his age and position, it’s no surprise the odd one is made - heck, all the keepers at the biggest clubs make them.

I agree , Sanchez's reach makes him the better shot stopper. Steele would not have saved the Rashford effort , it's not his fault but he is shorter. I felt both goals conceded at Elland Road would have been stopped by Sanchez. I do think Steele may have stopped one of the penalties as he would have attempted to unsettle the penalty takers and seems to have a knack of saving them. Oh well - if only we could find a keeper with a mixture of their abilities.

A few questionable hoofs long that sailed miles over Solly and out out of play, but I thought he was excellent yesterday. That save where the ball deflected off Webster was simply world class, Steele wouldn't have saved that.

Steele is a bit like Ryan. Solid, doesn’t make mistakes but also won’t make amazing saves. Bob is a level up on both which is why he is in the Spain squad.

To be honest, we have the best two goalkeepers this club has ever had. We’re doing okay. It’s just a matter of preference as their skill sets are slightly different.
