In my experience the "I bet you are fun at parties" crowd are the least fun people at parties - not an original thought between them.

I'm not fun at parties or find them fun, so I try to avoid them.

If ever I am asked "I bet you are fun at parties", I reply no that's incorrect.

However I have never encountered the "I bet you are fun at parties" crowd. Where do they hang out ?

'Allo 'Allo - someone seems to have been brought up on 1980s comedies, where it was funny to laugh at foreigners and to mis-pronounce people's names.

Suggestions on how to pronounce Mwepu, Bissouma, Maupay, Trossard , Moder (and plenty of others) to follow, I presume?

I just realised how ridiculous this comment is.. Has this plonker not noticed that Mac Allister is a British name :lolol: :lolol:

Unlike you, with this truly towering comeback laced with many layers of humour.. the more you read it the deeper it gets. Not the one dimensional flat and slightly sour response it first appears to be. You display an incredibly original, possibly unique sense of the bizarre. I am in awe at not only your comic thinking but also enamoured by the juxtaposition of a resigned pathos. All hail to you sir! You brave angel of the devastating comeback!

...which you are suggesting people should mispronounce for ‘comic’ effect, because he’s foreign.

OP is furious that people won’t laugh at his joke. And he’s standing by it. You have to admire that.

I don’t admire anyone who is clearly stupid and out for a fight, of any kind.

Been a member of this forum for more than 9 years, posted pretty much nothing for 2 years until 6 weeks ago, then blitzed the boards with argumentative posts.

The joke would probably go down a storm at the fun parties none of us get invites to.

Beyond the puerile - there is actually a quite interesting discussion to be had, on what is the 'correct' pronunciation of a geographically / culturally transposed name.

Take the example of the former Liverpool defender Sebastien Coates - another South American of Scottish descent. He's from a non-English speaking family in Uruguay.

His surname is Coates. It is actually the very same surname as the chap Peter Coates, who owns Stoke City (and Bet365) - pronounced as per the plural of 'Coat'.

Yet for the footballer - to him, to his family, and the South American media, he is Sebastien "Co - ah - tez".

Nobody is pronouncing it 'wrong'.

There’s nothing wrong with pronouncing someone’s name incorrectly for comic effect as long as you don’t just pick on foreign sounding names .

Way too many precious people around . As long as it’s not meant in a nasty way obviously. Faulty Towers is hilarious because of the relationship between the owner and the Spanish waiter .

Soon there be nothing to laugh about if someone gets upset about everything you say .

Obviously if someone looks like they are getting upset then stop but most people appreciate humour is meant in a good way . It’s very obvious when it has overstepped the mark .

Exactly.

Surprised how many bed wetting millennials are on here trying to show how woke they are by being offended by a joke.

Intention is everything. If the comment is intended to upset then yes it should be confronted. But these guys want to seek out anything they can to show off how woke they are. Its pathetic.

Nice to kick off 2022 with a culture wars / political correctness argument.

Not been nearly enough of that on NSC lately.

Been an Albion fan since before you were born. If I was stupid would I be able to spell Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis?

But yeah.. always up for a ruck with the 'I'm so offended' crowd.

I'm not offended, I just don't think your original suggestion is clever or funny.
