you have a winner of a league when each team only plays 3 of the five teams?

It really makes no sense at all to have a summer series winner, based on a league table when you don't play every other team in the league.

Errr, because it’s a bollocks excersise to raise the profile of the PL and the club in the USA , with its key American sponsor was quite possibly ‘obliged’ to take part

This sort of thing seems to be normal in the USA. Just take a look at how the NFL works. I think it makes them happier to say someone won, rather than, we just watched some meaningless friendlies. Certainly the games looked better than the usual preseason fare.
