Why would £ 30 be any incentive to give up. It will make no difference. People will give up if they want to.

Right, if I had a fag (I don't smoke), got tested and then went back a few weeks later, I would get a free £30 on providing a 'clean' breath sample?

Sounds worth taking up smoking (for one day only).

Or, does it not work like that?

Its quite insulting really that they think people do not have the will power to give up on their own byt £ 30 will persuade them to. Pathetic.

Madness. We need people to smoke more not less. The government's budget deficit is enormous and some asylum seekers out there are having to make do with carpets more than three years old!

I feel a bit right wing today, how about making smokers contribute to the cost of any treatment they need for smoking related illnesses ? Actually some Hospital trusts are now refusing to treat Emphysema patients who won't stop smoking.

No, it wouldn't. The breath test measures levels of carbon monoxide (yes, that stuff you hear people dying of due to faulty boilers - that's what you're breathing in smokers!) in your system. That accumulates over time.
