Can anyone remember the shops in the old Churchill Square?

I sat an entrance exam for my first job post (Polytechnic) degree in the Post Office South East Region HQ offices above Churchill Square - probably around 1984.

Did it involve putting letters through the correct letter boxes?

I asked this question a few times before on this board but nobody has provided the answer. LHS of Churchill Square (1966 version) there was a shop that I am sure did records downstairs and toys/Airfix kits/model trains upstairs, I think it eventually became the HMV shop. Does this shop exist only in my imagination or was it real. I am talking early to mid '70's.

I remember being in the Solarium once ( yes! I was meeting a girlfriend ) when one of the glass ball lights fell smashing all over the floor. It missed me by a couple of feet, they offered me a free coffee but I still had to pay for the girlfriend. Talking of Slims takes me back, my mates mum worked in there, we used to go in for freebies at the end of the day. Veggie lasagne and spicy veg curry seemed like a different world to us in those days. Looking at those old photos really takes me back. Also my Grandad was bought up on the old site, I believe Artillery road.

Legendary shop - got my first suit there in1986 when I wad 10. Nice Miami Vice style effort that I wore with the sleeves rolled up.

Does anyone remember Laskeys in Western Road? A sort of Dixons type store. I remember my parents buying me an Amstrad CPC464 in there.

The butchers was fantastic,was always a great sight seeing the game hung in the window.

There was a strange american fitness brand on the lower level - can't remember the name. I think they made a lot of protein shakes and stuff and were closed down in my earliest memories. That is the only thing I remember about the lower level.

I think it was called Weider's. Steve that owned it, was running the fitness shop in Air Street, the last time i went in there a few months ago.

I remember the slopes at the back leading down to the lower level and a walkway over Russell Road to the back of the Brighton Centre.
I also remember going ' trolleying ' in the early 80's. I reckon I made £1 - £1.50 each Saturday by returning the Tesco trolleys from the car park to the store

I can recall trips to Churchill Square from Eastbourne. Wasn't there a Green Shield stamp shop where parents exchanged books of stamps for consumer goods. I can also remember the BHS restaurant which had a conveyor belt which went round the outside of the restaurant where you put your dirty plates nd they would disappear to the kitchen. To a 5 year old it was magical to watch.

Yup. I think it was in the Jessops/Millets area. That must be late 80's?

The BT buildings above Churchill SQ were called Grenville House and Russell House after those roads. I worked there for a while.

Not strictly part of Churchill Square but backed onto the access road. Bunkers Hill, my Dad and his brothers and sisters were born in number 4. Nine people in a two up, two down. Pulled down in 1935 and of to the relative luxury of Whitehawk.
You can see were it used to be by looking at the map in Doc Lynams post, the pavement in front is West Street.
Dad went to St. Pauls School and at 14, to keep him out of the boats was sent down the road to the Brewery, to learn to be a Cooper.

No idea to be honest! Only model shop's i knew as a kid was the one on West St and Beatties now Pizza Hut.

Both my Daughters worked in there on a Saturday morning clearing tables. The cheese scones made with mustard were lovely.
