I have used both Palm and Blackberry and I have to say the iphone beats them hand down for ease of use and good design (say this even though was not a mac fan). I got my mum a second hand Toshiba laptop which she finds very easy to use as she is not used to software technology.

The main advantage of the i-phone is the screen size, so I do not know if Nokia et al make something with a better size sceen and easy to use. I think you can get old generation i-phones cheaper now, that may be good for just e-mail/chat site use.

I've got a Samsung i8910 at the moment and thats got a massive screen and very easy to use. Not much use if you've only got 120 notes though.

I have a Blackberry bold 9700, but also have an Ipod Touch.

If my old Samsung phone didn't have 12 months left on it's contract when I got the Ipod Touch, I might have been tempted to have gone for the Iphone.

Although having said that, the Blackberry is simple to use and does everything I expect from a phone VERY well. Go for the Blackberry if you want a phone for texting, calling and browsing the internet. Go for the Iphone if you intend on listening to music a lot or downloading applications, but to be honest the Iphone is extremely overpriced and you can very easily get a Blackberry on a 24 month contract AND an Ipod Touch for much less than you can get an Iphone for (over the course of 2 years).
