Asking for a friend who has been into Robert Dyas and had a decent look around but doesn't seem to think anything they offer is good enough

Cheers!

We had a rat problem at our property during the recent cold spell. It was spotted in one of the ground floor flats. It could be heard overnight in the loft. They're pretty smart like that, they can squeeze up the inside of drainpipes. Got a pest exterminator in in the end. He set poison at strategic points. When he was confident the rat had gone, follow-up action was to install a one-way 'rat-flap' at point where rat was entering the property from the sewer system. No problems since. Whole exercise cost about £500

They're too smart for traps generally . . . .poison and/or firearms are the only reliable solution.

we've had one in our loft come from next door . . . . Its eaten load of bait ( nail it down, don't just leave it, or they take it and stash it . . . . )

You can buy poison boxes for outside. In a loft you can leave trays of the small nibbly bits and bigger blocks tied to something with metal wire(so the rat doesn't take it away) .
Worth checking if your council provides it for residents, Lewes District Council does

Neither here nor there
A large rat trap with a metal arm is best. Plastic ones don’t always kill the rat outright whatever the manufacturers claim. Poison is all well and good but the rat usually dies in a place that’s difficult to access meaning weeks of stench and then flies.

All from my personal experience. Good luck.

If you have a rat problem then contact pest control from your local council. You might be in luck. I've used Lewes District coulcil for rats/ pest control teams in the past, and they will come round / investigate and sort . For free. (they might say its mice - depends on droppings , evidence of damage etc and get you to share photos). Don't think is available for all councils though.

Worth sorting though. Our one bit through the electrics underneath our dishwasher killing him and also killing the dishwasher which we had to replace.
