The Callings want to have a holiday which we can get to relatively easily by bus, train, coaches and stay relatively cheaply with the 3 nippers.

Can anyone recommend a great place, location that meet our meeds, in Britain or further afield,

we don't drive so must be fairly accessible though we will consider taxi's, or pick up's at the destination.

Best wishes.

I don't drive either, and when me kids were little we didn't have a lot of spare dosh. So we went to a holiday camp on the Isle of Wight. Warners I think it was. The kids were mighty excited going on a FERRY, were in AWE of the bluecoats, and for a couple of years they downright refused to even contemplate going anywhere else for their hols

isle of wight is the business, agreed. i worked on there for southern water for ages and loved it. going down colonel bogeys in sandown was hilarious.

its great for the kids too you have the ferry ride thats an adventure and cracking start to the holiday itself, their weird little tube trains, cowes, osborne house, oh it cant be beaten.

camping etc by public transport

I`m in the same boat so to speak - Ashurst or Brokenhurst camp sites in the New Forest are very near train stations - went with partner and three kids - also took bikes with us on the train from Brighton. Fox Hole campsite at cuckmere haven is also lovely. As others have mentioned, the Isle of Wight is good - we stayed in a caravan park at Shanklin which is near the rail station and also on the IOW cycle network. We`ve also stayed in caravans and chalets in Ilfracombe in north devon and Hale near st Ives cornwall - both accessible by rail.

Fellow Car free holidaymaker.
I can recommend Northern Snowdonia as a car free destination. Subsidised sherpa buses run regularly from Llanberis to Capel Curig, the coast etc. You can get a £5 bus pass which covers the whole of NW Wales for a day- £15 for a family of 4. Good weather= mountains or the best beaches in the UK. Shit weather +loads of castles and steam trains and plenty of shops if so inclined in Llandudno. Compact area too

Tried same sort of holiday in Lake District- buses were double the price and there were fewer wet weather options. Much more crowded, plus mountains less challenging than Snowdon or the Glyders t.b.h. Pubs were better in The Lake District though.

Both about 5 hours by train (Bangor or Windemere) about £40 return in advance.

Complete contrast, try North Norfolk. train via Norwich or Kings Lynn. Little resorts like Sheringham have got bakers, boozers and bookshops perfect. Old fashioned in a nice way. Probably would bore over 14s. There's even a bike hire place run by an ex-Brightonian! Sandy Beach! Hostel with family rooms about 5 minutes from promenade. 4 hours train about £30.

Actually to all the great helpers above can you post or pm any more details.

Thanks everyone

Another vote for IOW here. I haven't looked at the IOW link above, but just to say look carefully at the free ferry deals as they often don't offer them in school holidays. Park Resorts is another operator you can try again with free ferry deals outside of school holidays http://www.parkresorts.co.uk Their Lower Hyde park is your best bet, right next to a Lidl so you can walk out to do your food shopping instead of using park supermarket, and very close to Shanklin High Street with good connections to bus/trains etc

If you've got a Quidco account (and if you haven't you should have!) Park Resorts give 5% cashback when booked through the Quidco site. Just checked and Wightlink don't do cashback, but if you have to pay for ferry, PR usually have better rates than going direct

Another suggestion, maybe more for the Easter break rather than the Summer one would be Butlins?? 700 bus goes direct from Brighton to the door too, and it really doesn't matter where you are (Bognor, Minehead or Skeggy) as once inside you could be anywhere, and you can make use of all the free facilities. They've got a half price sale on for 2009 holidays so worth a look imo. Lots of snobby attitudes exist about Butlins, but as THPP says about Warners, the kids will absolutely love it, and there is plenty to keep them amused! I went every year as a kid and never wanted to go anywhere else!

ETA just did quick search on Butlins - Family Holidays At UK Holiday Parks
and 4 nights from 20/4 is £249.50 for your whole party half board - down from £458!! Website saying only 8 rooms left so you'd need to hurry if you wanted to do this

If money is tight then why not Butlins? Very cheap accomadation if you get the right deals from a paper. It's compact and great fun.You can still leave the compound and go and explore and return.Been to the Bognor one and i enjoyed it.

Isles of Scilly.

Train to Penzance, Skybus from Lands End to St Mary's (you get picked up from the train station - flight time is 15 minutes!), taxi to the harbour and boat to any of the "off islands". I wouldn't particularly recommend staying on St Mary's, but it's the hub of the boat network and gives you lots of options. Nobody has cars out there, so you won't feel left out.

We're going in May.
