Was much more LB than CB at Rangers. Ajax have tried CB more and maybe that’s where it’s gone wrong.
Also gives us more flexibly with playing a back 3 with wing backs for tough away games in Europe etc
I just think he has a fair chance of being a better option than Webster, and very little chance of being a better option than Estupinan. Might be the LB in early round cup games, to save Estupinan's legs a bit, but PL games his best chance is going to be at LCB, if he comes to us at all of course.

i think he would offer great cover at both CB and Left back. For the right money its a yes from me.

Naylor now reporting it. Seems like he will be the man if colwill can't be done. Will probably know this week.

If you look at the stats, you cannot get a much more progressive, ball playing centre back than this guy (if that's where he'd play)

Not particularly convincing defensive stats overall, but looks like an RDZ type player.

Yeah you look at the stats and you see a player who would fit right in here with the ball. But the defensive part is a real concern. For a CB to have such low clearances and aerials won highlights how awful he was last season despite the incredible attacking stats. The problem we have is, especially with Caicedo off, that we are going to face more and more teams that set up like Everton and Newcastle did, running at us from deep, counter attacking at pace, knocking the ball long and into space. Can we afford to include a player who is seemingly so bad at defending however good he is going forward? I suspect he comes in (if at all) as cover both for LB and LCB but think we will also get someone FAR better at defending for the LCB first team spot.

Indeed. Very quiet on that front. I like veltman but we have gone up a level. I see velty as a squad player now
my comment was a little cheeky as we actually really benefitted from perverrto carlos not being injured. However, we really dont want to rely on gross too much at RB even though he was excellent.

He was great at Rangers if memory serves me right - instrumental in their Europa League run. Still only 23 years old, and I believe a full-back by trade rather than CB, but perhaps he can also fill in there too. I would say probably worth a punt if he's out of favour at Ajax!

right back is the priority
It would be nice to have a right back as good as Pervis was on the left last year, but in terms of players in the squad who can play there, playing Lamptey on the wrong side has been our only option to rest our first choice left back. At right back we have Lamptey, Veltman, Milner, Webster & Gross. Odel Offiah is a centre back who has repurposed in both full back positions, but even he is right footed. We desperately need another left back.

I imagine the opposite, LCB competition, and cover at LB, don't think he isn't going to worry Estupinan much for a starting position.
Estupinian player more matches than we liked last season, we’d have been in trouble on the left if he’d have picked up an injury. Bassey would get plenty of game time with us entering 3 cup competitions if he signed.

These aren't the players you're looking for.

Last time we were interested was as a Cucurella replacement. I’d be confident this is for left back mainly with CB as an added bonus

Bassey signed for Ajax in July, Cucurella didn't join Chelsea until August, with Pervis joining the following week.

I'd suggest Bassey was our LCB first choice last season, and Colwill was our backup option. Don't forget Potter often liked to play 3 at the back.

Not hugely exciting, but home grown, covers LB and LCB. At €15-20m seems steep for an Ajax flop.

The way we seem to be looking to spend money this window should put the nail in the coffin for anyone expecting us to keep Caicedo.

Our squad is going to be a hell of lot bigger than City's if we don't loan out some of the youngsters in an around the first team next season. Currently stands at about 40 players according to @chaileyjem's excellent squad post.

Perhaps taking a failed Bassey off their hands sweetens the Kudus deal?

Loaning our youngsters out is what we do - no reason to expect anything different this season.

As in £35 mill for Kudus, or £30 mill for Kudus + Bassey. I do NOT rate Bassey.
