First cracked screen was a mystery - and I didn't discover it after a night on the ale or anything, it just appeared. I tried a phone cover once, but used to drop the phone trying to get the bastard out quick enough to answer a call, too fiddly.

You shouldn't need to take it OUT of the cover. Just get a flipcase jobbie like this
