Indeed, he wasn't the difference between the two teams. But he did allow Ulloa to get a rest, and that was vital IMO. We are trying to get promoted, and having him in the squad will help - it's that simple really.
Which makes me state the bleeding obvious:-

'who's fault is it Ulloa looked like a 20 year old pit pony'?

Barnes's. So? Tell Barnes he's a ****ing idiot, and move on. Suggesting he shouldn't play for us again (those that did) was lunacy.

The reaction Barnes got when his name was read out and the way the North Stand in particular reacted to his goals and man of the match performance persuaded me once and for all that NSC does NOT represent the groundswell opinion of Brighton support.

A few posters on here have always dashed to their keyboards at the first sign of a stray pass, a missed shot or a perceived mental problem. Good to see they're over-represented on here, and a small (if occasionally vocal) minority in the crowd.

I'm a Barnes fan, as you will have guessed. I thought the tripping incident was daft and frustrating. Do I want an apology? Er, no.

Funnily enough, I thought precisely the same thing post-match on Saturday. It put a juicy big fresh Cherry on the top of a fantastic afternoon.

Just to defend myself a bit here, I have never disliked Barnes as a player, he has a fantastic knack of being in the right place for a striker. I was annoyed because it wasn't just a stupid trip, it came just after a suspension for another red card. His petulance and moaning is what I do not like about him as a player. It also has to be asked how many more chances does he get, if he got sent off in the play offs do we continue to back him? Of course we all hope that he has learnt his lesson and that all this stupidity is now behind him.

I haven't, I know I wouldn't have over-reacted like a clueless idiot (crosses fingers).

Both of these - I was annoyed with Barnes for a needless sending-off but that was all - always rated him as one of our best players myself and look forward to further improvements in the future

Very true, I was just putting your Ulloa statement into context.

Barnes can't be praised for allowing Ulloa some much needed rest, because Barnes is the only reason why Ulloa is knackered.

I personally hope that, like fellow intelligence-challenged individuals Wayne Rooney & David Beckham, he can sort it out as he gets older and become the model pro that Becks became.

No one can argue with that. What some of us do argue with is comments like "Seems I am not alone in thinking he should not represent us again" - how would that help us get promoted? It's just a stupid thing to say.

It depends what's in it for us. If CMS and Hoskins were fit, I doubt he'd have played on Saturday - as it is, we need him.

Barnes was superb on Saturday & showed us one thing : he can Only play to his & our best as a centre forward, so thats when required or not start & have on bench as a sub for Ulloa

Understood.

Sure, but I'm not praising Barnes, I'm just saying we need him. All I care about is Brighton, and having the option to pick Barnes is better for Brighton that not having that option. It's not complicated is it.

I believe that despite his good performance on Saturday his future with us is as a squad member to supplement and complement Ulloa rather than to play as a wide midfielder or in any other position other than as a striker and even perhaps used alongside Ulloa if Gus considers we need 2 men up front. How that situation changes when CMS is available remains to be seen but on no account should Barnes be played wide left just to accommodate him.

I pointed out I'd run out of my usual Barnes ambivalence, coming on the back of his Wed debacle, and he should go.
So not too bad by comparison.

Reading it then reminded me, on Saturday, I was straight back to being Barnes ambivalent again.
Sure he played well in a good side playing excellently against a poor poor side.
But with hindsight I'm struggling to place any real 'champagne' moments from him.

He had 3 chances, finished two of them. Surely that's his primary job? Ulloa missed a very similar chance vs Leicester.

He also made a very good lay-off which led to one of the goals (forget which) and was vocal, energetic and pacy throughout the game. One of his goals was beautifully taken, the other professionally dispatched. Not all strikers at the club would necessarily have got them, as we have seen on numerous occasions.

He passed it for Buckley to lay-off for Lopez. His only assist was the pass to Buckley. Agree about his finishes though, very good.

Yep very true, chances all strikers score and miss on a regular basis.

But as for champagne, obviously Dave oozes the stuff, Orlandi was sublime, Buckley's goal, KLL frightening 'Pool, Bridge & Bruno marauding forward.
Barnes & bizarrely enough Calde are the only 2 players I can't attribute an 'off the seat', champagne moment.

In saying that I do have to own the fact there's something about Barnes that, unlike most of NSC, has me firmly on the fence.

Played a fantastic volleyed pass to Will Buckley for the first goal after he had brought down Upson's clearance. Fourth goal, played a key part in the team move, with his swiveled pass.

Thought his first touch was unusually good, held the ball up and capped off a great performance with the 5th and 6th.

I think it's quite petty that his detractors can't just congratulate a good performance without somehow trying to belittle it; the opponents were poor, they had x first teamers out, he was only good because the rest of the team played well.

Barnes always looks at his best up front and we look at our most dangerous when orlandi and Lopez are playing behind the striker. My only fear with him being available is a return to the lop sided midfield with Barnes out in his 'defensive' role.

I hope Gus has finally learnt that we do not look any weaker defensively without Barnes on the wing and uses him where he is most effective as a traditional number 9

I hope you can teach Gus, he clearly has so much to learn from you.
