Both my kids recently purchased Toshiba ones for £400 each which seem perfectly adequate however I suspect your daughter may need word / excel as well so would have to be added to cost or just download from a recovery CD ?

My and my housemate had toshiba's, and they both died after 1 year and 6 months. Mine was used loads, and hers not so.

I've got a vaio, and it's brilliant, runs like a dream, and for uni it's perfect. I use mine in lectures, as its not noisy at all.

Go to PC World...I'd suggest waiting until the summer end by which time new models will drive some great bargains. Also, you can get a student package and support deal at PC World which means dead Toshibas won't be a problem.

is the WRONG answer...unless you're browsing and checking them out, then buy online!

Good point, the online price is cheaper so do go in first then go online and buy at PC World, or elsewhere if you can find a better deal. The exception to that is you can go in and get a member of PC World staff to break up a package for you or sell you something they shouldn't.

Another good point, don't ever let PC World try and fix anything...not that they would given the Service Level Agreement starts with the lead time of half a century.

the kids had Dells 2 Christmases ago...out of 3 only one still working...one just died, one caught fire. and the third one's has had to have a replacement battery. naturally all of the problems happened just after the 1yr warranty was up! and we had to have 2 replacement chargers in the first year, but admittedly Dell just sent new ones through the post when we rang them up.

Bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro just before moving to Spain nearly 4 years ago, used constantly since then, and had no problems.

Battery has just started to loose a bit of life but still lasts 3 hours no problem

Just my view
