The Tesco plan was rejected and thankfully so, seeing as they have 'new' stores boarded up which were due to open in November, following their shocking figures this week.
The road into the ferry is going to to be done this autumn as I have already posted.
The new cash machine was fitted yesterday.
The Coffee House is an ideal place to waste 20 minutes with delicious cakes, paninis etc and great coffee, next door to Dees, which is a great newsagents.
The best thing about Newhaven? People still smile and say Good Morning.

And " Good afternoon "
:) Good afternoon Thunder Bolt, I would have said good morning but I have been out walking a dog in the lovely surrounding countryside.
Good points anyway, as you know it's not all bad here.

Definite signs of improvement on the pub front. There is a micro pub opening October 8th, which is an off shoot of the Stanley Arms and both the Crabtree and the New Sussex Hotel are decent. Plus Gardiner and Scardifield are the antidote to soulless DIY warehouses.

Brilliant aren't they, especially the hardware and plumbing shops in my experience. Not so sure about the electricals, but that's mainly due to losing my rag while being on the phone to my sparky and trying to work translate his requirements to those in the shop...

Newhaven must not lose that ferry. If they could only get a plan together to turn that side in to shops, marina the place would be fantastic. Without those sorts of guarantees the French will most likely pull the ferry.

Newhaven is looking good so far. I might have a drive over next week and scout the area.
Btw, I grew up in Portslade and really don't like the place. I know a small part of it is getting better (Victoria Road), but it's still pretty grim imo.

Most of Newhaven faces north or east and is therefore in the shade for far longer periods than any other town on the south coast. When you drive over make sure you have enough petrol to get round the one way system straight back out & up the hill to sunshine and civilisation

Agree on the ferry and I have always thought it would be nice to have some decent shops, bars and restaurants next to the river on the Eastside.
I had a walk down to The Ark early evening yesterday and had a couple of pints, but I see that is up to let, I really hope we don't lose another pub.

My mum moved from Coldean to Newhaven 10 years ago, the town was due to undergo lots of regeneration work. I'm not sure what happened but in that time Newhaven seems to have gone backwards, the value of her house has barely increased despite having a brand new kitchen, bathroom, garden, glazing and all other rooms decorated. In the meantime we bought a flat in Southwick for £145k which less than 3 years later is valued at £180k

I bought my last house in Newhaven for £137.500 in 2001 and sold it in 2008 for £245,000, it was a modern house so it didn't require loads of money being spent on it.

A smaller house in the same road was sold in 2000 for £76,000 and in 2004 for £145,000, it was then sold again for £176,000 in 2007.

Most of Newhaven faces north? How did you come to this idea?

I moved to Newhaven in March 2004 and the value of our house has gone up over £50K, not having had to improve anything.

It's nonsense from someone who hasn't got any sense of direction. Our house faces west and the sea is to the east.

I think you'll find whatever way your house faces the sea will always be South.

I'm not particularly bothered about whether prices are going up, but that doesn't seem right at all.

Nothing to disagree with there. All I know is my mum is looking to move and she was disappointed about the valuation of her home. It's a nice enough street and the house is immaculate, she keeps up to speed with the values of the other houses in her street and they've been consistently priced. I don't know whether she bought at an overly inflated time or what but she doesn't seem to be seeing much of a return for a house she's been in for 10 years  maybe the area is rough, but you guys would be better placed to know that?
