The amount we paid for Baleba you’d have hoped he would be more first team ready, but it’s a growth curve at the moment and really that’s been the case for all the young players Bart, Facu, maybe a bit less so for Hinsh but even Enciso looks a little lost at the moment like Fergie. Carlos could be very good for us in future but too much too soon now - the tragedy is senior players like Dahoud Milner now Gilmour haven’t been there to take up the slack
Baleba had a great game yesterday soured by one short back pass.

First look at the thread since getting back late last night. Haven't looked through so apologies if already mentioned but I thought Hooper was appalling yesterday. Burnley almost every time pulling Brighton players back by their shirts but no bookings or too late in the game. One player kicking the ball away early in the game, no booking and Burnley players not retreating 10 yards at every free kick and no action. We weren't great but we were not helped by a referee who sacrificed the laws of game to allow a game to 'flow'.

Hooper is very consistent at being a nightmare for us.

This is the thing. Recruitment, Pedro apart, has not gone well this season. Fati and Dahoud a disaster. Milner contributed very little (and mostly played out of position at FB where he’s been woeful due to the lack of options which most of us called out pre season. Baleba and Barco might become great players but aren’t ready yet. Igor Ok, but he’s no Colwill. The loss of so many recruitment staff may have been more impactful than we like to think

This is what I'm worried about. Last Summer's recruitment presumably was derailed by Winstanley leaving, possibly severing some knowledge/relationships and maybe Chelsea snapping up some of our targets. This Summer could be worse with Jewell now gone.

Baleba had a great game yesterday soured by one short back pass.

Having seen it now I don’t even think his back pass was all that bad. He was stretching and he got as much on it as he could. I feel like it was less a mistake from either him or Bart, but more of a “shit things that happen in football sometimes” thing. Bart also didn’t have many options from which he could really get rid of it and did what he could. It was just a massively unfortunate rebound.

I've only just seen the 3 minute highlight vid.

How that ended up 1-1 I will never know.

Bloody good job for us that the 'football luck god' went to the wrong place on the wrong day to give us as away side the equaliser. That god of course is a fan of the club up the '23.

Is that all you've seen of the match? Also, are you suggesting it should have been 0-0 or should Burnley have won?

Squad too small ie injuries
I don't think the squad is too small (but I agree that injuries have impacted us big time).
Our stating 11 yesterday was not bad:

Verbruggen
Veltman van Hecke Dunk Estupiñán
Groß Baleba
Adingra Moder João Pedro
Welbeck

Ignoring the youngsters, on the bench we had:
Igor, Llanana, Barco, Steel, Ansu Fati and Buonanotte

The following players are injured:
March, Hinshelwood, Mitoma, Milner, Webster, Ferguson, Gilmour, Lamptey and Enciso

That's 26 players, most of whom would expect to be in or around the first 11. If we had a more players then, barring a crazy injury list, some of them would never even get on the bench. Let's see out the rest of the season, get everyon fit over the summer and go again.

Just watched MOTD and correctly was the last game. Whilst we didn't deserve anything from the game I'm surprised more hasn't been made of the Adingra chance where loads of praise given for excellent defending.

That excellent defending was pulling/holding his shirt all the way in to the penalty area. Surely a clear and obvious error in not giving a penalty?

That said it seems short pulling is entirely tolerated by refs these days, despite it being clear cheating.

But of those 26 squad players, there are a number who were never going to be able to play too much (even without the injury crisis): Lallana can no longer play a full game / is an injury risk, Lamptey and Webster are injured more than they are available, Moder coming back from a long term injury, Milner is 38 FFS, Groß/Dunk/Veltman/Welbeck are coming towards the end of their careers so need to be careful and in contrast Ferguson/Hinshelwood are teenagers and need time managing.

The most worrying aspect of last night's MOTD was observing just how toothless we appear compared to most other clubs at the moment. A breather and Uncle Tony's comprehensive summer stock-take is badly needed.
Most of the toothlessness comes from the painfully slow build up play, even when we break we slow it down most of the time. Infuriating to watch. Burnley were so much more direct and on another day we could have ended up with a Luton away result.

Hooper did not help with letting Burnley get away with wresting and shirt tugging without giving cards. He might have thought that he was letting the game flow when in reality he was letting Burnley get away with cheating.

According to the league’s official statistics, we’ve scored a total of one (1) goal on the break this season

How many from set pieces? More than 1? :lolol:

However many it is I reckon we have conceded far more on the break from the opposition when we f*** up the set piece.

Shirt-pulling and wrestling was allowed by the fat **** Hooper all day long. JP and Welbeck were fouled every time the ball was played up to them. Hooper gave them 7 or 8 free kicks but should have given 17 or 18. It was a terrible refereeing performance. Adingra should have had a penalty.

Yes, I'd forgotten the 10 yards thing. Every time, we waited and gestured - but Hooper did nothing, so eventually we'd give up and pass it backwards.
